At one point Northern Rock refused to allow him to consolidate debt onto his mortgage in Aberdeen because of the defaults.

Northern Rock were the only ones that would help on a secured basis. As an existing customer I had a faultless record.

At any point you could have sold the Aberdeen property and rented in Spain?

Shouldn't be forced to sell by an evil bank. Very dangerous going abroad with nothing to fall back on. (Look where I am now).

there is no necessity to own.

The bank didn't give me the choice. Another key point. The idea is to own and live "rent free" in retirement once the mortgage is paid off.

I guess you are caught now, can't give up as the legal costs are too high.

This is a very serious case. Nobody has got this far. The bank must be found to be at fault. However long it takes.

why didn't you just purchase a laptop that *definitely* had an inbuilt modem, instead of taking the word of two very unsure salesmen, even with the promise of a hassle free return? :-/

You'd be amazed at how difficult that was back in 1998. I tried hard. I'm still trying!

They couldn't have stopped you selling, unless you were in negative equity with no way of clearing the loss. I know the ideal is to live rent free in retirement, but plenty of people delay buying or sell up for a while.

This is your problem. At some point you could lose a case and not have the funds to continue. Then the legal costs need paying and you end up going bankrupt and starting again from scratch. Nothing to lose and everything to gain. Hope you manage to live a little and don't let this take over your life.
