Any carpet-baggers out there?

  • Portman took over Staffordshire. I had just over £100 in the Staffs (had the account for years) and I'm sure I got £80.
That's exactly what you would have got, s-d-w. (£100 basic windfall taxed @ 20%.)

Alared is probably referring to the Portman's takeover of the Greenwich BS where 5% of the balance was paid = £5 on £100 balance.

5% is not a bad return on a savings investment. But it was an offer that was made before ordinary investors were savvy enought to say "no".

So I doubt there will be any future offers that don't have a proper minimum windfall for members who possess a vote :).

I thought I was doing well being a member of 22 of the 62 remaining Building Societies. This guy has got membership of 51!

I know I am being a lazy mare, but is there a list of (and hopefully a link to) :D the remaining 62 building societies?

I have a Nationwide account dates from pre-carpetbaggers clause. ;)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

My husband has a West Bromwich Building Society account that dates from before the 'donate to charities clause' and we both have Portman (previously Staffordshire) ISAs dating from before then, originally with the Staffordshire.

    Everything is crossed!

Bit of a stupid question, and sorry if its been asked before but I've never really looked at the windfall payment donate to charity thing. Do they get you to sign away any windfall payments that your ever likely to get or do they just put a restriction on for a couple of years and if you stay with them long enough do you then get any windfall payments.

Generally 5 years, some longer. But this usually only refers to demutualisation, not if the BS is taken over by a larger competitor.

Interesting article in the times (above)

I was looking to get in at the Scotish just days before the opening balance went upto a grand.

Not sure about Tipton & Coseley rather go with Ipswich building society as my next target to add to my 20+ passbooks.

Tipton and Coseley is quite local to me in the UK.

Last time I asked, you had to have the right postcode to open an acount.

    We hadn't.

Don't forget, that all being well, Portman, Universal and Mercantile is it ? are already spoken for so don't get wasting your hard earned hundred quids in that neck of the woods.
  • Hi,

Does anyone know how much you need to have in you nationwide current account to possibly be in for anything?

    Thanks,
