Another vote for normal night-time pads instead of maternity pads here - I didn't bother buying mat pads after DS2 - they really are like bricks!

As for breastpads, the problem is you won't know yet whether you're a leaker or not :o so it's hard to advise at this stage. You'll only really know once you've started breastfeeding and your milk has come in (usually day 3 after the birth).

If you're not a heavy leaker, I guess any breastpads will do. If you are, however, a leaker (and I'm speaking from experience here :o :rotfl: ) the best pads are Lansinoh and Tommee Tippee (TT are cheaper and you can get them in Tesco, so less hassle finding them, plus they're often BOGOF or half price). They're both virtually the same. :T

Trust me, if you leak lots, washable pads won't do the job, even with the best of eco-friendly intentions. :o

I'd say get a pack of cheapo pads and a pack of Tommee Tippee and then see how it goes.

Good luck hun, and come and see us on the parent club thread when you've had your little bundle of joy! :j

Sorry too much information here :o - but after the birth of DS2 I had a LOT of stitches and found that I couldn't use ordinary sanitary towels cos they irritated my stitches! Also my midwife told me that the bleach they use in sanitary towels can irritate any wounds!

I used Tesco night time pads and they were great - I also used Boots maternity pads for a while and they were rubbish! Also, the Tesco towels are only 79p and the Boots ones are £1.

For breast pads I've used Boots own and Tommee Tippee and they were both fine - the Tommee Tippee were perhaps a bit better shaped, so slightly more comfortable. I've now gone on to Boots washable pads and they are quite comfortable.

Just on a slightly related note though, if you are breast feeding and are sore at all, or get cracked nipples, I can't sing the praises of Lansinoh lanolin ointment enough! I found it a life saver!!!

    Hiya,
I've got 2 LO's 9 months and 3 years. I found I bled really heavily for about a week so bought about 6 npackls of cheap maternity pads. For the first day I used 2 pads at a time and certainly after 1st baby the bulkiness did seem to help painful areas. As a tio buy some big (not enormous like my OH bought me) cheap value pants that can be washed on a 90 wash or thrown away. Don't waste money on disposable pants!
I breast fed my 1st for 2 years and am still bf my youngest. I have tried lots of disposable pads. Tesco and other cheap pads were all too bulky and not absorbant. I now only use lansinoh and tommee tippee. They might seem more expensive but some days I can wear them for a couple of days if I'm not leaking too much. You should get loads of samples, try them out. I wouldn't buy more than 1 box of each before trying them. I ended up throwing out the cheap ones,

I tried using sanitary towels after the birth of my son but due to the consistency of the blood (was also a bit of mucus sorry TMI) it didn't absorb well and with stiches post birth I needed to stay drier. Found mothercare towels and breast pads really good. Might have a nosy at Tesco's though for baby number two who's due 3 days before your's Jak :D

    Hi,

I used Mothercare mat pad after the birth of DD, I liked the security, can't remember how many I used though.

I recommend TT breastpads too, I was a big leaker, still am on occasion, and washable ones were useless, but TT soaked it all up no problem.

Have a savoy cabbage in the fridge for when your milk comes in as it can help ease the engorgement and any soreness.

I second everyone else on here, tommy tippee pads are brilliant if you leak a lot! Tesco and boots ones are ok-ish (you don't get overflow patches on your tops!) but did find that I went through several pads each day. Never ever use george ones, someone gave me their leftover pack of these and they were useless imho.
And I'd never recommend the boots maternity pads either, if it's not tmi the top layer kind of separates and sticks, they just seem really wispy lol! Tesco ones were def better....finally found the best things 3rd time round, just when I'm def never going to need to use them again lol

I breast fed mine for 18 months each and found I rarely leaked after the first few months. I used the disposable breast pads at first but found they were a bit "crinkly" and irritating and the washable ones were softer. I think the washable ones were Avent, they came in a nice little bag that you put them in to go in the washing machine. I bought 2 packs (of the washable ones) because you need plenty to wash and wear.

As for maternity towels - with my first son I needed the biggest possible size by the truck load for 2 months... For my second son, ordinary ones were good and I only needed them for 8 days!

And Lansinoh is great! If anyone tells you to "let the cracks dry out", don't listen to them! Its better to treat the cracks as though you had a cracked, split lip so bung plenty of Lansinoh on!

FINALLY..... I had 2 weird cup thingies as one side would leak as the baby fed on the other side. I can't remember what they were called but I could collect a few oz of milk in there (if you sterilise them first).

    Liz
