Best breast pads and maternity pads?

I want to know which maternity pads people have used and how many does a girl need after birth for say, the first few weeks?
Also , did people use re-usable breat pads or disposable?
How much do these things cost? Is cheapest best? If so , where to buy from?
Sorry for grim post, but I don't know where to start...

  • hi jak

i would recommend the mothercare or johnstons rather than boots (roughly same price) as when i used boots i could see them through my clothes.

I expressed until dd was 3 weeks old she is now 9 weeks and i'm still wearing them. I have a tiny leak about twice a week but i'm scared to stop in case it happens when im out :(

if you are not breastfeeding or expressing then you prob wouldnt need them as long.

i'm sure someone will be along soon with some better advice.

if your not planning to breastfeed then to save a ickle bit of money you could always cut the maternity pads in half and use them. no1 will know unless you want to tell them lol

I used disposable breast pads for about the 1st couple of weeks just to make life a bit easier, then I went onto washable ones (I bf for a loooooong time!)
I found the maternity pads really uncomfy so just used night time sanitary towels, as I found them a lot less "brick" shaped

    Good luck!

As far as maternity pads went, I used the Boots ones and liked them.

I only ever needed to use the big maternity pads for 2-3 days when bleeding is heaviest.Allow for 20-30 pads as you need to change quite a lot

After that I found ordinary high absorbancy pads for heavy periods were fine, gradually lowering the absorbancy as bleeding got lighter.

The ordinary pads are also a lot less noticible under clothes

I liked Tesco maternity and breast pads. They're in pink packaging and next to the baby accessories, and they were cheap! Had no leaks or any problems with either, and I breast fed for about 6 months.

I only used maternity pads for the first few days when the bleeding was really heavy, and the thickness makes a nice cushion against your delicate area! After about 4-5 days, I just used normal sanitary pads (Tesco's own again!) as they are cheaper.

Hope all goes well and look forward to your baby announcement. Join in the parent club and have a natter with all the other Mam's

    Hi Jak

I'd recommend using maternity pads in first few days also - apparantly they are kinder on your skin and less likely to irritate sensitive areas! I used tesco's also (both maternity pads and breast pads )- they were both nice and soft, however I also used organic cotton b'pads in the early days and they were lovely - really soft and I was sad when I ran out as I then went on to washables. Have since gone back to dispoables as I kept running out at inconvenient moments and so now use both depending upon whether the washing has been done (I like to wash pads with towel wash without fabric softener to help absorbancy).

I never used maternity pads after either of my children, I had no choice when I was at the hospital first time round I found they were so bulky that they irritated me. I jjust used night time sanitary towels like this lady said. They are longer and offer a similar amount of protection and a lot less bulky

As for how many you would need I can't answer that one, after my son I used loads, after my daughter I only used 3 days worth and ended up with 4 packs which are useless now it depends on various things, each birth is different.

Good luck with the birth ....
