I'm very excited to have 'refound' this thread I started years ago!!! I now make crumble regularly
if DH wasn't on his silly detox I would make one for tonight. I have the time....I wonder if it would freeze well? what do you think?r.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -
the crumble mix freezes well but if you were to freeze a complete one, I suppose it would depend on the type of fruit you use. I have used apple and apple & blackberry before and they've been great - just reheated them from frozen in the oven. I had cooked the fruit beforehand though - might make a difference if you used raw. If you decided to do something like rhubarb and strawberry, the strawberries might not be so nice though.0

Definately not money saving but this is gorgeous for a special treat. My son loves this so he was thrilled when it was one of the desserts on christmas day. Remember if you make it that this is an American recipe so the "cup" is not like your average coffee mug it's a measuring unit.

I think you would be ok without cooking it first. Although you could cook it first if you wanted a softer consistency. I think you might need to spice up the pineapple and add some sugar if it isn't really sweet.
There is a recipe here for Pineapple & Apple Crumble doesn't seem to require any precooking and seems to take the normal amount of time.

I usually leave crumble until the top is golden brown, don't pay too much attention to the exact timings.
Comment about using tinned pineapple from earlier in the thread

i made
fry an onion and any veg celery carrot a parsnip and some leek bits
add stock and a big handful lentils.
cook till veg is soft adding anything else that takes your fancy
i added wine and some mush.
reduce till delisious then top with a mix of any of
marg flour some oats parmesan cheddar wheatgerm whatever you have and i added some dried onion bits from lidl (YUM!!!)
cook on lowish for 30 mins and served with ratatouille
you could use almost any savoury 'bottom' and add the crumble as a lighter alternative to a pie crust darn site quicker as well!0 -
Hi, I have been given 11 cooking apples from my neighbours tree and would love to make an apple and an apple and raspberry crumble. However i have never made them before
Do i need to cook the apples first? Like i would if i were making apple sauce? or do i just bung them in the dish with sugar (should i add water?) and put the crumble on top??
Any help is much appreciated.....i will get the hang of this cooking malarky!0 -
It's up to you - I tend to cook the apples for a couple of minutes to soften a little. So far as sugar is concerned this is a matter of taste! Cook the apples and taste them - som are tart others are not.0

Hi,
cheep and very easy way to make a fruit crumble is,
Peel & slice your apples, place into an oven proof dish - add your rasberry's
Pour over your fruit a tin/carton of custard.
Sprinkle on top a bag of ready made crumble mix brought from supermarket.
Put in the over for about 40mins or untill top looks a nice brown colour.
