standard phishing email - if you'd clicked on the link, you'd end up at an address like 'www.yorkshirebank.com.CN' in the hope that you hadn't noticed and gave over your bank account details.

Tens of thousands of people will have received it. It's the shotgun approach ... in order to find people gullible enough to part with their details?

Some good reading here ..... and you can forward the Email onto them if you're feeling public spirited ;) :

No one who understands what a phishing mail is needs to be the slightest bit concerned, I get several such phishing mails a day to my various accounts.

If you really have never come across an email like this before may i suggest that you read up on them online and learn how to protect yourself. Most banks also issue warnings about these emails as well, so it really is best to learn about how fraud and scams work online if you are new to the internet and email.

If you're getting them directly related to your accounts, I'd be worried. I get them for banks I have nothing to do with, and occasionally for the ones I do.

I know all banks have a phishing report email addy but is it really worth sending the 2 or 3 I get a day on my spammable address? I think not.

I would think that everybody gets these, it doesn't have to be from the Yorkshire Bank (supposedly), it can appear to come from any bank at all! As explained above, it's called 'phishing'. I got 3 in quick succession yesterday all purporting to come from the Nationwide. As I haven't an account with Nationwide and never have had, it was easy to see that this was 'phishing'. DH and I regularly get these from banks we don't bank with. Sometimes we get a warning from our own banks that they have been subjected to a 'phishing' attack and repeating the warning never to give any of your bank details in response to these emails.

If only 1% of the people receiving these emails send in their sensitive details, resulting in their accounts being emptied, it's worth billions to the perpetrators.

I checked my spam folder the other day and there were literally dozens of these damned emails from just about every financial institution going, including Paypal, threatening to suspend my online access and/or close my account unless I responded

Never, ever, ever click on any links provided in an email, regardless of whether you do actually bank with that particular institute - always use your regular log-in to check if you are in any doubt whatsoever that the email might be genuine, although in 99.9999% of cases they will be phishing mails ;)
