Asda - Can They Do This?

Options
This is the first time I have posted on this site and sorry it is a vent!

I was in ASDA and bought a bulb kit (a little container with 3 garden bulbs). It was reduced to £1.49 but went through at 2p (yes I was surprised to but thought they may be selling them off as they were spring bulbs) The assistant noticed the price, made a comment and all was well! Later that day I was back in Asda for other purchases and and decided to buy 3 more kits as my mother was thrilled with the first one. Well tried to buy! After all the purchases went through the assistant noticed the price of them and referred to another SA (the one that had served me that morning) She said that I could not buy them as they had been discontinued/deleted?? I offered to pay the advertised price for the bulbs and then a third SA was referred to. By this time there were 3 SA's and a huge queue :o and I was told that they could not possibly sell them to me and I had to stand and wait while all the sales had to be made void. Can they do this??

I did write to Customer Service and received a letter which stated "I'm sorry to hear that the product is no longer being sold even though they were visible for you" (aghhhh not only were they visible...they went through the till!!) He also enclosed a £10.00 gift card "as a gesture of goodwill" I feel that this is another insult as he did not address my issues and I have not been back in that Asda as I feel uncomfortable... any views please??

Yes I guess I should look on the bright side..and... forget the SA's attitudes and Customer Service... thanks..
  • A shop isn't required by law to sell items that are mis-priced - the 2nd time the assistant may have assumed that was the case and stopped the sale.

I had a similar thing with Tesco just after xmas - they were selling off their packs of finest wrapping paper at about 20% of original price (gold or silver but fine for other occasions as it wasn't xmas design - just seasonal colours)

Anyway I had bought some before xmas and found it to be great for wrapping odd shapes as it doesn't rip like the cheap stuff so stocked up in the post-xmas sale.

Got to the till and the gold scanned okay but the silver set off an alarm - apparently they could no longer sell it because the plastic case it was wrapped in was considered "dangerous" (even though the gold was packed in same plastic!)

Anyway, assistant very kindly went and fetched me 5 more golds to make up for the silvers I "wasn't allowed" to purchase.
 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.
  • It sounds to me that the 2p is a built in feature to notify staff when discontinued/withdrawn items are presented so they can prevent the sale or the like

And possibly the 1st SA didnt know this

Also I dont think you have much cause to complain re attitude, as simply telling you the facts you dont like doesnt count as this

Send the £10 voucher back and say you just want a letter addressing the issue.

Why do you feel uncomfortable exactly?

No, the reason why things are reduced to 1p/2p on tills is because as mentioned they weren't suppose to sell it. The stock is reduced to 1p/2p whatever so when they through it away it has a minimal effect on their shrink (stock loss/stock take).

Yes - I think you're right to feel this way; asda's horrendous and makes me feel uncomfortable too.
  • The product was discontinued/recalled and you shouldn't have been allowed to buy it in the first place. You got a tenner out of it, I don't see the problem.

Surely if someone sends you a "gesture of goodwill",that is going a big part of the way towards addressing your issues?

trouble with many companies and "gesture of goodwill" it really means, here's £10 now shut up and go away, far easier for them then to actually deal with the problem!
