Cheap accomodation in Portugal

Hi all

Managed to secure 3 very cheap flights to Porto via Ryanair, flying from Bristol at a cost of £57 inc taxes - they were still available when I last looked today.

I am looking for cheap accomodation for two adults and one teenager (yes she is moody and no she won't stay with her grandparents - talking about the Daughter, not the wife!) in North Portugal and wondered if anyone could help and advise as we are on a limited budget.
We are travelling on the 13th of June and staying for seven nights.

Thank you in anticipation and keep up the good work.

    Hi,

Glad to see you are considering my home town!!

If you want to stay in Porto, there is the new Ibis a bit outside of the centre but with a underground station just in front
    http://www.accorhotels.com/accorhotels/fichehotel/gb/ibi/3227/fiche_hotel.shtml

for your dates it is only €35!!

7 days in Porto is too much. 60 kms away there are Ibis in Guimaraes and one Braga for the same price. You can rent a car or take the train and do a tour of the north of portugal and galicia.

It is a 3h trip by car to Santiago de Compostela. So closer if you stay in Braga.

If your budget allows have a look at http://www.pousadas.pt These are small hotels in historic buildings and provide a nice introductions to the country. The equivalent in Spain is https://www.parador.es Sometimes you get really good rates.

If your budget allows chech this offer: http://www.pousadas.pt/historicalhotels/en/promotions/TouringUnlimited/

If you need more help, let me know!!
  • Hi, We are looking for a relaxing holiday - we would prefer to be near to a beach and would like a small guesthouse/mobile home/b&b or similar.

We would really appreciate any help or advice you could give.

    Many thanks

I'm sorry but being from the north I can't really help you much since I don't stay in hotels to go to the beach.

I know there is a Mercure http://www.accorhotels.com/accorhotels/fichehotel/gb/mer/3016/fiche_hotel.shtml in front of the beach in Povoa do Varzim and this is a really nice town with a long esplanade to promenade near the beach. There is a casino nearby. Lots of nice cafes and discos. Not sure of the quality of the hotel. do check tripadvisor.com before. Not sure if €75 per double is within your price range.

Novotel Vermar is also in Povoa do Varzim: http://www.accorhotels.com/accorhotels/fichehotel/gb/nov/2124/fiche_hotel.shtml

Searching on Expedia for Esposende, which is a beach closeby there is a new 3 star Apulia Praia Hotel for £51 BB. I used to spend my summers in Apulia and this was a fishermen's village really calm and lovely. Not sure now.

In either case, you would have to rent a car to get there. But it might be worth having the car to explore the region in the afternoon. Just a suggestion.

If I can think of something else I will let you know.

    Sunderland,

The best beaches and the best weather are in the South of Portugal, not the North.
As you are staying for I would recommend a couple of days in Porto and then rent a car to drive south.
You don't need to get to the Algarve!
Closer to Porto, and not too far from Lisbon, I suggest Figueira da Foz, Obidos, Nazare. From there I would drive down to Peniche and Ericeira.

    Lovely fish by the way!!

I would also drive down to Lisbon.
Lisbon, in my opinion, is the best "all-in-one" capital in Europe. Within Greater Lisbon, you have the culture, shopping, kids activities, beach, scenery, even mountains. You don't get that in any other capital.

Yes, Tinuel is right, the best water is to the south of Coimbra (in the North, as a joke we say that is already in Marrocco, because the weather is so different!!). But by that don't misunderstand, it won't rain or anything. But for example tomorrow it will be 16º in Porto, 18º in Lisbon, 23º in the Algarve. It was better yesterday, with 23º, 25º, 25º.

The further south you go the better. It is 300 kms to Lisbon and 500 kms to the Algarve from Porto, closer if you stick to the Costa Alentejana which is the Coast between Lisbon and the Algarve.

Having said that, the beaches in North Portugal and Galicia (for example Sanxenxo) are very popular in the summer. A bit to the south of Porto, in the Aveiro region there are lovely beaches, with dunes. The tourism is not so massive as in the Algarve. But remember it is the Atlantic that bathes Portugal.

Ultimately it all depends on what you really want from your holidays.

I am sorry, but I am from Porto, not Lisboa, so I cannot really help you a lot.

But, I went to tripadvisor and got this information:
Located 15 km from the airport and 10 km from Lisbon, the Ibis Lisboa Oeiras hotel has 61 air-conditioned rooms, with Wifi Internet access. Apart from free parking, a bar and a snack service 24/24 are at your disposal. Tennis just a few km away. You are 5 km from the beaches of Oeiras and Carcavelos and 25 km from the King's Palace in Sintra. The Sea Museum and the permanent exhibitions of the Cascais Cultural Centre are 15 km away. Estoril, its beaches and casino are 10 km away.
Area de Servico da Auto-Estrada Da Costa Do Estoril-A5 KM 9,6
    Lisbon 2780-826
    Portugal

Did you notice the hotel is in a rest area in the motorway? I am not even sure if this is not a toll motorway (which might constitute a problem in terms of access)... Have you checked that? So your wife and you will have to drive everyday from the hotel to whichever destination you need...

Have you considered staying in the centre of Lisboa? The traffic is terrible in the morning but if you leave early by car or public transport it should not be problematic. and your wife can just walk wherever she wants. both of you can enjoy a relaxing evening in one of the city's many caf!s and restaurants.

    Hi Viren,

I see that Pcg2001 is a fellow countryman!! I am from Lisbon.
Within the same price range, let me also recommend Holiday Inn Express in Porto Salvo. Both are comparable in terms of service, maybe Ibis is just a bit better.
Worth comparing for location. Oeiras its an ok place, if you are a footie fan, closer to Oeiras, in May, the Portuguese Cup final will be played.

If time allows, you can't miss Estoril, Cascais and Sintra, all within a few minutes reach from Oeiras/Porto Salvo and really worth a visit.

Check the sites below for accomodation in Porto Salvo:

  • Hi

Thank you both for your time and effort and make me consider two different possibilities. Both can be exciting, one in city center and the other nearer to b`ful coast.

I have just checked that 2-3 of my office mates are also going and planning to stay in Lisbon so I guess for the moment I plan to stay in center of Lisbon and we can share a car pool to work also that way. Might put up at Ibis lisboa jose malhoa.

    Thanks a lot guys
