Thank you for your replies everyone. I think we still have a 'proper' jeweller in town.
Don't know if they have a jewellery/goldsmith bit - although they're good for a haircut and a meal out.
OH has made a good recovery, but I wouldn't want to take him through airport security:rotfl:.

I second the get someone to recomend a good goldsmith as I quite often have to have my engagement ring repaired (thin shank + clumsy person = regularly mangled ring). There was a great goldsmith where I used to live who would only charge me about £18 to repair it but when I moved I thought he was too far away so I found someone local to my new location. BIG mistake. He charged me £35 and within a week it had split in the same place and when I took it back he had the cheek to tell me it was my fault for rough handling. I made the journey back to my original goldsmith and its perfect, I've even had it reduced in size since.
A good jeweller is worth his weight in gold ()

Definitely go to a jewellers :) it's the only way to do it. Trying to fix it yourself will probably do more damage to the ring than it has now and it's just not worth doing it :)
Hope OH gets better soon... both arms... OUCH!
