Wedding ring.

Back in September my OH fell off a ladder and broke both his arms. The wonderful A&E staff were just about to cut his wedding ring off when they managed to remove it intact. However their cutting gadget has left a sharp nick in the ring. Do you think it would sand out with very fine grade sandpaper or is it a job for a jeweller?
Any other suggestions gratefully received.

It depends on how bad the nick is: if it's deep a jeweller would be better as they would (hopefully) fill the nick to repair it. If it's only superficial, buy one of those little buffing wheels that fit in a hobby drill.
Any grade of sandpaper isn't really a good idea on precious metals as they are usually softer compared to non-precious metals, and therefore easily ruined with the tiny scratches.I have no signature.0 -
Heya,
Would the best bet not be taking it to a jeweller for them to have a look? You would obviously need to be balanced in your view of their advice, but a good independant jeweller should give you his honest advice.
Hope you get somewhere!!

Hey there,
Just to second what Paulies Girl said...
I fractured my ring finger - didn't realise at the time (before it started to swell. Later I tried and tried to get them off but they would not budge... so when my finger started to go a funny colour - there was no choice) off to A&E and a lovely nurse who had to put a spilt straight through both rings to get them off (I knew this was coming - which was why I put off going!) I thought there was no hope of them ever looking the same again.
DH took them off to the Goldsmith who made our wedding bands and I got both my rings back in almost 100% perfect condition (although mine were pretty mangled!) There is a *tiny* mark although now I am looking I can't see it
I think they might need a clean for it to show up :rotfl:
Like anything - ask around and see if anyone can recommend a goldsmith in your area - it sounds expensive - but as long as you get quotes before they start you should be fine.
I hope your OH is recovering well now.
*off to hunt down the jewelery cleaner now*

definitely a jeweller.0

Definitely a jeweller, but as someone else has said, ask around and find a good goldsmith, don't take it to a high street jeweller.
My dh is a goldsmith and my wedding and engagement rings were both made by him (he has changed career and does something else now though), but a good goldsmith won't chage you the earth.0 -
DH needed his wedding ring enlarging (odd as in the 18 years since we were married it's me that's put weight on, and he's the same size
). He took it to and independent jeweller who charged £30 to insert a small piece of gold, and you can't see where it's been done. I'd definitelty recommend that.

definately a jeweller...I had to have my ring reduced by 10 sizes and you honestly cant see the difference!Nerd no 109 Long haulers supporters DFW #1! Even in the darkest moments, love and hope are always possible.0

I had to have my engagement ring made smaller when I bought it as did my sister. I've spent many an hour looking at both rings to see if I can spot the join and really can't see them.
I would definately go to the local goldsmiths type place rather than H sams or a big chain as I think the workmanship would be better (if not cheaper too).Debt: 16/04/2007:TOTAL DEBT [strike]£92727.75[/strike] £49395.47:eek:   £43332.28 repaid 100.77% of £43000 target.MFiT T2: Debt [STRIKE]£52856.59[/STRIKE] £6316.14 £46540.45 repaid 101.17% of £46000 target.2013 Target: completely clear my [STRIKE]£6316.14[/STRIKE] £0 mortgage debt. £6316.14 100% repaid.0 -
I know this might sound an odd suggestion but bear with me. Is there a jewelery/goldsmith college near you as they might be able to do it cheaply for you.Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)0
