M & S Wedding cakes

Hi all,

just wondered if anyone had any experience of M & S wedding cakes, they seem really reasonable in price and there are some really lovely ones that can be decorated with fresh flowers.

We've had the birthday cakes from M & S before, are the wedding cakes the same??

Advice appreciated, Lorna
Thanks for the advice Martin! :money:

I went to a wedding a couple of weeks ago where the cake was from M&S. Top layer was chocolate cake and the bottom 2 were fruit cake. Neither was very nice - I didn't finish a piece of either. They were both really dry, and neither tasted particularly as they should - the chocolate wasn't chocolatey and the fruit one wasn't very fruity if you see what I mean.

Looked much better than they tasted. Guess it depends how much you care about how the cake tastes!

I used M&S wedding cakes, the fruit ones. I had more compliments about the cake than anything else.
Ten out of ten for me.

  • Tinkerbell, are you sure they were M&S cakes? I have heard nothing but fantastic reviews for them so far.

Lorne, you can buy a sample piece of the fruit cake for about £1.25. It is lovely and the cakes are very good value. It's what we're going to have!

yes. the bride told me just before they cut it.
  • I had a piece of M&S sponge cake at a wedding a few weeks ago - it was amazing! Normally sponge cakes have a weird thick overly sweet icing but this one tasted lovely and not dry at all.

I have also only heard good things about m&s cakes, I am going to order these too.

Anyone that has ordered these, I was told in my local M&S that if you are ordering the round white basic ones that you only have to do it around a week before, I was going to do it earlier but I am getting married in september and I have heard mentioned a few times on the boards that in August the do a 3 for 2 offer, might try and wait for this, does anyone know when in august they did this last year, was it at the beginning or end??

I'm having M&S cakes too but am going to order them at least a fortnight before.

The bride of a wedding I went to last year missed the deadline by a day (something to do with working days) and had to rush round to sort something. This was after she had already been let down by someone else so I'm not risking it.

we had m&s cakes for our wedding (june 98) we had the sponge ones.
we hired a lovely tiered cake stand and then decorated the cakes with fresh flowers to match my wedding flowers.

we had loads of compliments on the day

i was told recently that cakes need to be ordered 5 working days in advance and that the sponge ones dont have a long use by date on them.

The only thing I've heard (apart from nightmares with delivery) is that they are fairly small and don;t look very impressive. I've seen pix and they do look quite short, and the lady who is making my cake said they are half teh size of the ones she makes (I've had masurements and know this to be true) but I can;t comment on how they taste.
