Mattresses- Memory Foam-help

We purchased a Sensaform Ultimo King Size mattress (with a bed) at the beginning of April 2007. THis came with a 5 year guarantee.
The trouble is that I wake up with a bad back every morning. I never had a bad back and it seems to be linked to the mattress getting worse as the time has gone on. My back seems better on holidays. My husband loves the mattress (should I get rid of him and the mattress?- joke).
Has anyone any ideas about how i should approach the company with my concerns? I don't want to start off with something that they can fob me off with- such as it's my health and not the mattress. The mattress was just over £700 so it really would be expensive to me together with the cost of a new mattress

Hey, I got a memory foam mattress and had the same problems as you, searing back pain upon waking... fine the rest of the day. Partner was fine, i guess its to do with how your weight distributes.
I just got one of those inflatable mattress wedges till i can afford a new mattress.0 -

I can't see how the company can do anything, apart from out of courtesy. From what you are saying, there isn't a manufacturing fault, and the mattress does not suit you.
You must have tried the mattress before you bought it. This obviously is not going to give you a long term view on its effect on you, but a bit of an insight. As mattresses are so important to health they aren't worth scrimping on and should be thoroughly tried by the user before purchasing.
The manufacture can not be responsible for every individuals preferences and circumstance, with a generic product. If they were you'd be buying custom made at a lot more than £700.My farts hospitalize small children0 -
Just curious did you buy from Sleepmasters?0

Sadly as has been said there is not much that the shop could offer as you are finding it uncomfortable. Trying matresses is so important but even if you did try it in the shop you can't always get a good idea from a few minutes test as to what it would feel like after 8 hours.
If the cover is removable, how deep is the memory foam part of the mattress?
The deeper the visco-elastic layer the better the support, anything around the 10cm or 4 inch mark is pretty good. If it's shallower you may be 'going through it', once your body heat has softened it to mould to your shape if it's too shallow you press it flat and end up sleeping on the block foam underneath. When this happens you may as well be sleeping on a sponge you wash your face with. At £700 i would hope it is fairly deep, unless it was unfortunately purchased in their 28 day price establishing period and went down to 1/2 price a few days later, at £350 it would be a relatively cheap king size mattress.
Remember 'sales' are utter rubbish! The matt is worth what the final selling price is after 28 days establishment, not the original higher price.
After a year your guarantee has probably become a warranty with the manufacturer, if you get no joy from the shop (and i doubt you will sadly) try approaching the manufacturer direct for advice.

Thanks.
Yes- it was bought from sleepmasters- why?...
To dreamypuma i did try it out and we don't think we 'skimped'. To Mo Money- thank you it is deep and it was in the 'sale' at that price so we could have been unlucky and paid more! Choosing a mattress is hard when you can't exactly test drive it properly!
Lidlest- it sounds like we have the same problem.
I might contact the company in writing and see what they can do. It's worth trying something. xChrissie

We stayed overnight at a relatives recently, and they had a new memoryfoam matress and I found it very uncomfortable, so did OH.
We needed a new matress ourselves and ended up getting one of these, even though we had not intended to.. but it's not uncomfortable.. I think the difference is that at the same time we also got one of those sets of curved bouncy bed slats thingummy jigs (don't know the right name, sorry) to replace the fixed flat wooden slats that were on the bottom of our bed.
Our bed is so comfortable now it's unbelieveable, I really think it's those slats that make all the difference (I knew they alone were comfortable as DS's bed has them, and a cheap mattress but his bed was always the most comfy in the house), so it might be worth thinking about for you.M.A.C.A.W member number 39

I like your words...thingy...it sounds just like me. However..Please could you find the proper words, the bed we bought was a bed with slats so you might have found my solution. THanksChrissie

I have been telling people on MSE for a long time now that you can't choose a mattress by bouncing on one for 10 mins in a shop. All you can do is get a very rough idea. It takes a few nights sleep on a mattress to find out if it is suitable or not. In fact due to the fact that memory foam isn't like any normal mattress, you should give it at least a week.
For this reason you should find a seller who gives a satisfaction guarantee so that if you decide you don't like it you can exchange or return it.
Memory foam mattresses are made up from at least two main layers. Many people think that it is just the memory foam that is important. However the layer under the memory foam is just as important. You could have the best memory foam in the world, but if the layer under the foam doesn't give your back support then you might as well buy a budget mattress.
A few people do find that because memory foam contours to your body that the memory foam can actually apply pressure on to nerves causing pain that wasn't there with a mattress that didn't contour. This is however very rare.0 -

I think they mean sprung slats. However this isn't likely to be the reason for the improvement. It is more likely to just be a better quality mattress.0 -
Yes, they are sprung slats, on a frame that just slots into the bed base, Ikea sell them.
Yes the matress we bought is a better quality one than the one we had before, but I do believe the sprung slats make a difference too as there is more give to the bed to work with your body.
As I said before my DS has a bed from NEXT with sprung slats, has had for years, with just a very basic not great mattress, but his was always the most comfortable bed in the house, it was the slats that made the difference there (you'd have to try it to believe it - it's like the difference between lying on a wooden park bench and lying in the middle of a trampoline - the bed with the sprung slats has that slight give, a bit like a water bed I imagine, but not so extreme).
DD has a bed from IKEA, fixed slats, brand new good mattress, again not as comfortable as DS bed with the sprung slats.
The slats we got also are adjustable, so you can tailor them to how flexible/fixed you want them to be, giving you a lot of leeway to make the bed how you like it.
I can't convince you, but if you could sit/lie on the beds you would understand what I'm talking about.M.A.C.A.W member number 39
