    Hiya

Just reading this thread with avid interest as hubby wants one. As the ASDA deal has now finished, can anyone advise where the best deal is.

Thanks so much. This stuff is really over my head.

    Clara,

If your boyfriend is into games, I would get him an XBOX 360 instead.
Just my opinion. Quite inexpensive now, and you can get used games for very low prices.
It's a far superior machine in comparison to a Wii.

I am a Wii owner by the way!!

Surely it depends on what games he wants to play? There's nothing on the Xbox 360 that really appeals to me. I much prefer gaming on the PC and I also play on the Wii if I just want a quick blast of something fun.

Personally i wouldn't buy anybody a console as a surprise unless they had expressed a strong interest in it before.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

the 360 maybe superior to the wii but the wii wasnt meant to be better than the 360/ps3, its meant as a console to play fun games

It's only superior if you prefer the games though. Yes, the Xbox 360 may have better graphics than a Wii but if you don't like the games it's pointless. You can buy a PC with better graphics than an Xbox 360 but if you want to play Halo 3 it won't be much use.

I'd just add that if you want games that the whole family are likely to play, the Wii is generally a better buy. My wife is officially beating me on almost every Mario Kart time trial which is giving her much cause for glee...and she loves playing me at Wii Sports boxing, almost too much!

Plus, as mentioned above, it's not just kids' games on the Wii, there's Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil Chronicles, No More Heroes, Metroid Prime Corruption...plenty of good games for gamers who like a bit of blood, violence or depth.

Really, there are very limited options for "grown ups" on the wii...

There are probably < 10 games that a "serious" gameplayer would be interested in. And in any case they really do seem shabby when compared with Halo 3, COD4, GTA4, Assassins Vegas 2, etc etc.

I had a wii on release and was really disappointed by the total lack of depth in most of the games, although things are slowly improving.

Just to throw the flip side here, though, there are plenty of "non-grown up" games on the 360: viva pinata, beautiful katamari, guitar hero / rock band, scene it, etc, plus a host of XBLA titles, sports games, film tie-ins and the like...The 360 really is a lot more "family friendly" than a lot of people seem to realise.

Sorry but that is just your opinion. I'm a grown up "serious" gamer and have no interest in GTA4, Halo 3, Assasins Creed or Vegas. But I do enjoy Mario Kart and Lego Star Wars on the Wii. It really is utter crap about the Wii being for "casual" gamers and the Xbox 360/PS3 being for "Serious" gamers. All three consoles are fine machines, buy which ever has the games YOU want to play.

Personally I spend most of my gaming tume on the PC as none of the consoles offer the sort of "serious" games I want to play like Company of Heroes or Medieval Total War II. I've also always found FPS games are better on the PC, not that I play many nowadays.

The OP wants to buy a Wii for her boyfriend so why does anyone bother recommending an Xbox 360? Presumably he has expressed an interest in a Wii at some point.
