Oh and if you do think it's an abcess or the pain gets too bad - check NHS Direct - ther should be an emergency dental centre you can go to nearly 24/7 if need be. Our nearest one is 20 miles away but we've had to go there with OH once and they are very good Wish I'd gone there initially back when I had a problem!

There's one not far from me but only open limited hours, not 24/7.

If you've got a teaching hospital you can get to [one of the city ones usually], they have dental students that are on-call for the A & E departments. you can tell I've got the t-shirt can't you:rotfl:

I guess to present myself at A&E would mean I'd need to be in almost a life threatening situation though?

well oral abscess can lead to blood poisoning apparently, if left and left untreated

Not certain it is a tooth abscess, although the fact it's persisted for 2 days and seems to be getting worse, and I only have half a tooth, probably suggests it's something more than a minor gum irritation.

i dread to think how they coped in the olden days before anaesthetic and dentists :eek::eek: (tho some areas don't have dentists nowadays i know)

I wonder if I can blackmail the emergency dentist. Take along a pair of bent longnosed pliers, and after he/she has anaesthetised the area and bodged it up again, and say "I take it out or you do" :rotfl:
