in Credit cards
Hello guys and gals before I start, I just wann asay that this is ONE HELPFULL FORUM thanks.
Ok, I have a question
About 4 years ago, I had pretty good credit, I had 3 credit cards and a loan for £5000. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I lost my job and went into a DEEP state of depression and I'm not proud of it but the credit card and loan payments were the least of my worries and they never got paid.
Now, I have lived in my current address for 18 months, I have a current account with a SWITCH card, 2 O2 monthly mobiles, and an insurance credit agreement to my name but I still can't get credit cards! even CAPITAL ONE reject me, it's probably because I'm not on the electoral role (never have been) the reason I'm not is because I'm worried that the previous debts will catch up with me (it's not that I don't want to pay them, it's just that I so badly want to build my credit file).
I did a check with EQUIFAX using my mums address as previous and ommitting the address I used for the previous credit and it came back with a credit score of 399 which they say is a fair score but advised me to go on electoral role.
Can these previous companies trace me if I do go on the electoral role?
Please understand that I am not proud of what happened, it happened through illness and I just want to put my past behind me and move on and rebuild my life and credit file.
Is there anything I can do?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Matt

Dear Matt
You can take one piece of action guaranteed to rebuild your life and credit file - repay what you owe!
Playing around with addresses to get a false reading of your credit score is wasting your time, and as you have difficulty getting a credit card now, to me, shows that you have defaults on your file which will not go away.
If you are not in a position to repay all at once (who is?) a token gesture would be a start.

It's not a case of not wanting to repay what I owe as I fully intend to do so but until I can afford to I want to start rebuilding my credit, I'm 30 years old, have a baby daughter and a wife and it's time I started being responsible and in a couple of years we want to get a mortgage, so rebuilding now is what I have to do.
I have no intentions of not repaying, I just want to rebuild my credit first, but there is a descrepancy, as I had insurance out on this credit and they refused to pay."I Assume I Need No Introduction"0 -
dont link your addresses then, just use the one your in now and say you been there 3 years, get yourself on electoral role where you are now, they dont ask for your previous address.
get a capital one secured card, you have to pay a deposit but they report pretty swiftly to CRA's and you wil build up your file0 -
Any CC provider will want to know ALL your addresses for the last 6 years as this is how long CCJ's, defaults, and bankruptcies stay on your credit file.PeeWee wrote:dont link your addresses then, just use the one your in now and say you been there 3 years, get yourself on electoral role where you are now, they dont ask for your previous address.

And PeeWee, I'm alarmed that you have suggested this course of action for the OP. MSE does not exist to help and encourage others to commit fraud and deception, which is what you're doing here.0 -

You say you want to rebuild your credit but you can't do that until you pay off what you owe. Also you mention that you got your credit score from Equifax, but that is a very generic score that they offer. Each lender will score you themselves.0 -
If you've notified your bank, mobile phone comany etc.. that you have changed address then you will be linked to your old address, and it will show up when a company does a search on you.
Do you not think that when you apply for anything with "Mr Matt Niteflyer" & your DOB that they won't see that there's an existing person with the same details & previous bad debts. Then they might look for a connection between 'you' and 'them'?
You can't just lie about your previous address & history, there is no way to start from scratch. Why would we have CRAs if everyone could do that? The best way to start rebuilding your credit history is to contact your creditors & come to an arrangement to start repaying the debt that you owe. Even £1 a month would be in the right direction.
Why didn't the insurance pay out?0 -
Sorry but you are wrong, I did a credit check with experian with my current address and my mums adress (where I lived before I got into trouble with the creditors) and my credit file comes up clean, the only problem I have it the electoral role.
I have 2 mobile phones at my address, 2 insurance creit tems, 1 current account and they are ALL Up to date."I Assume I Need No Introduction"0 -
