plans for conservatory,is this a good way to treat people?

right before i start, iam not trying to get something for nothing, but dont appreciate being ripped off,i just want a good price

iam building a conservatory, sent of a drawing conservatory company gave me mnoths ago,and building control replied back asking for clarification on 7-8 points, and wanted detailed plans,so i got a architect to do plans,i got hold of this guy as he works for a customer of ours
when i e-mailed and asked him to do the plans he said he would estimate the price to be between £250-450,this didnt invovle a site visit or anything like that and i hgave him scale plans i had from a previous extension to work off,so although he had drawing to do they were minimal compared to most plans
he did the plans, sent them of to building control and i heard about 2 weeks later that the building warrant had been approved,so i e-mailed the guy who did the plans on monday telling him i had recieved a building warrant and how much did i owe him,he said i,ll tell ya later
today he sent me a very short e-mail,which said "price for drawing was £415 excl vat thanks"
i was very taken aback by these prices:eek: now i know everyone has to earn a living, butthere drawing were minimal and at no time did he mention anywhere the price quoted was ex vat,so i e-mailed him back saying i was a bit shocked at the price and any chance of getting it a bit cheaper,as earlier in the week he had asked me to order him some stuff thru my work for himself, which i ordered and got delivered to my company,s depot, then to his work at our expense, and as i had given him these goods att a very good price, would he knock a few quid of my bill(like you scratch my back,i,ll scratch yours)
he phoned me up about 15 mins after i sent them e-mail and said he thought it was pretty cheeky of me,how would i be paying,i said more than likely visa,he asked if i had a cheque on me and could i pop it up now,or if i payed cash i could get it cheaper, and he said price of good,s i got for him was 65 pence each(i got him 120) dearer than this time last year!!! of course it is mate if you hadnt noticed fuel has rocketed, and the companies who makes the produces prices for raw material has rocketed, over heads etc,i saved him £154 on the list price of these good
whats everyones views on this? is he being unfair? am i being unfair?

Did he actually just do the drawings or did he actually do the local authority planning submission too?

Were his drawings hand drawn or CAD? and were your drawing you gave him hard copies or CAD?

That's a very reasonable price for a set of CAD drawings and the submission to planning. You say you saved him £154 for the parts you got him, have you priced the drawing work elsewhere to see what he saved you?

no but submission to planning doesnt involve much apart from putting a set of plans in a envelope

I didn't think you needed planning for a conservatory.

Depends on the size and a few other factors to whether it needs planning permission.

The guy would have had to draw up the plans, scale from the original drawings (not recommended I add, when OH does plans he always visits and takes measurements himself, costs a few quid more but worth it in the long run!), fill in planning (and possibly building reg) forms, submit the plans to the council and be on standby to alter the drawings to suit the planners, as well as answer any queries the builders may have later down the line.

OP, you got a good deal.
  • are you peeved at the price or at the fact you didn't properly confirm the price beforehand?
