baby sunscreen

Options
Hi just wondered if anyone can point me int he right direction for sun screen for my four month old daughter that doesn't cost me £10 for a tiny tube? She is a red head like me and unfortunatly caught the sun the other day even though I tried to keep her shaded as much as I could whilst I was out. (I have a parasol but it was overcast when i left out and I didn't realise it was so warm already, after all two weeks ago it snowed.)

  • I just use the supermarket brands or Boots soltan range, usually on the buy one get one free offer.
You would have to use a factor 35+ or above for your daughter as well as a hat and a parasol just to be on the safe side:cool:

  • hi steff

i have just bought factor 50 from matalan (banana boat) for £6 may seem like a lot - but its a really big tube and i only need to use a tiny amount to keep her skin safe

i used it during the last nice weekend weather we had and it worked a treat :)

hi, i would check with your health visitor, as mine told me sunscrean was not to be used on babies under 6 months. but, as a red head myself, i know how easy it is to get caught by the sun, so i would def check!
  • thats what makes being a new mum so difficult - we all get conflicting advice even from health visitors and doctors - you never know what to do for the best

my hv told me to use it - my dd is 8 weeks - as she says in the better weather, casualty is full of babies/toddlers with bad burns from the sun - that scared the life out of me

i think it is prob better to use than not as when oh put it on her he missed a bit and that bit was red when we got home - even with parasol etc
  • the soltan one was the £10 one, but to be fair it wasn't on offer. The baby one is 50+ which is what I am going for, as I am also a redhead and I prefer to err on the side of caution. Had a look around and the banana boat one is on offer at tesco £3.50 according to the website so will go there I think. Thanks for all your replies, and Miss Kitty you are so right, as even medical staff give you conflicting advice.

Mother of red head here too...I get mine from Home Bargains - it's usually £2 or £3, when Boots have it for over a tenner.

I also use this hat on him:

It is really soft, and doesn't have to be taken off etc when they're in the pram.

Hi there, try not to use sunscreen if you can, just keep her as covered as possible using loose fitting cotton clothing and keep her in the shade. Look out for thin cotton leggings and long sleeved tops and wide brimmed hats. Those 'sunsafe' suits are also really good, they sell them in Matalan for £6. When out and about use a parasol or a shade such as a 'shade a babe' which covers the whole pushchair. You could also adapt a dark coloured sheet and lay that over the pushchair.

If you're careful you can get away without using a sunscreen but if you really need something for such a young baby I'd recommend a natural product such as The Green People Organic sunscreen. It's not the cheapest (£13.50 for 150ml) but you use such tiny amounts (if you're careful with clothing and shading) that it'll last for ages. http://www.greenpeople.co.uk/default.aspx

Avon.......when on offer you can get it for a good price.
  • My daughter is fair headed and light skinned. We went to Turkey last year and the daily temperature was around forty degrees. She was quite often in the sun, in and out of the pool. I bought Tesco's own sun cream which came in a "gun" and was pink so I could see where it was going. She didn't burn at all. We are going away again this year and when i was in Tesco's tonight they have the same sunscreen on offer for £1.74!!!

  • I bought the banana boat one for £5 on offer and was very smug untill yesterday discovered it in our local poundland. well picked some more up anyway, and she has been fine with it. Better than being burnt.
