Royal Mail - Lost recorded item

Not sure if this is in the right section but here goes...I sent out a recorded item worth about £30 a couple of months ago and it was never delivered...fired off a form to Royal Mail after asking them to send me one out. 4 weeks later I get a reply telling me they can't do anything because the address doesn't exist...!!!!!!!!! This is an address I visit regularly and also send things to quite often...is this them just trying to get out of compensating me??

This is a major problem with Recorded as items are accepted for the service without having the address checked in the database. I have also lost out on this before and in my case the item was going to a major Oxbridge university library and the post code was taken from their headed paper, yet it did not exist in the Royal Mail database for some reason!

I argued it for a few months but Royal mail were quite clear that if the address was not in their database it was not covered under their terms of service. They had no suggestion or advice for those of us who come across these invalid addresses.

Sound like a job for the Small claims court they love bashing these large companies that assume they are above the law. I still remember fondly shafting British gas because they assumed they could do as they pleased lol.

Would be a job for the small claims court if Royal Mail didn't still have crown immunity

does it come up on RM's database?
  • I think on the receipt they give you at the post office it says something along the lines of "address checked OK" and then yes or no.

Presumably they should warn you if the address check fails when they accept the item for recorded.

AFAIK all they check is that the housename/number matches one of those available for the postcode given.

Perhaps custardy could confirm what the "check" is.

 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

Thanks guys, not sure if this is worth going to the small claims court for...where to get stated, what it would cost. Although I would like to knock em down a couple of notches!

Is the item recorded as undelivered on Track and Trace or did the intended recipient tell you it was undelivered?

If RM are arguing that it could not be delivered due to the non-existent address, then the item should have been returned to you as the return addressee. If they have lost it completely, regardless of the fact that they state the address does not exist, I think you would be entitled to claim back for the item.

Keep at them, I have been in a position before where RM have tried to fob me off with regard to compensating for an item (and me with DH being a postie too!), and after chasing them for several weeks they 'miraculously' found the item and delivered it.
