BT Broadband speed issue

Options
My BT broadband speed has been cut in half!
In the past they have told me that my line can support max 1mbps & I have received speeds of 1-1.5mbps.

Now my broadband speed has dropped to 480kbps & BT tech support are telling me that this speed is correct because my line can support max speed of 0.5mbps.

Rather than argue the point with their non-UK based call centre (like talking to a brick wall) I have complained by email.

Is anyone else having speed issues with BT?

the profile of your line can change if BT , for some engineering reason, re-route your path from the exchange.

I was on the lucky side where mine actually doubled after a cable fault was remedied

I don't think they will change the route at your request as you have service

have you tried replacing all your ADSL filters to see if your speed improves ?

    Thanks browntoa,
I changed the filter yesterday and it has now been 3 days since my speed reduction.

I think it is very unfair that we pay for services "up to 8 meg" but less than 10% of consumers are receiving this speed. BT's justification of this is just to say that they charge for download usage and not speed. But at just half a meg it takes ages to download anything!

my brothers in the same boat, lives in the sticks and gets 1.2meg at best

BT are starting to upgrade their exchanges to what they call ADSL2 , which will give speed UP to 24 meg , from either them or a supplier who buys the product wholesale from them

I've also seen papers on trials at 100 meg using copper pairs and research showing a possible 250meg over copper pairs ,so there is hope for greater speeds

I think ofcom are also looking at the advertising of "8Meg broadband" by ALL the suppliers think they will be made to make it clearer that its most unlikely that you get that speed unless you live next door to the exchange ...lol

I've heard about ADSL2, I think it is coming to my exchange later this year & I am hoping things will improve.

I am 4.5KM from the exchange but live in a well populated area so no doubt my neighbours are also suffering if cables have been re-routed.
