Which do I g o for?

We have been considering moving to Broadband for some time now, and are currently on Tesco Dialup which we have had no problems with. We have considered staying with Tesco and upgrading to their broadband package, and also been tempted with UKOnline. I haven't seen much in the way of reviews for Tesco, but UKOnline have had some "up & down" reviews. While our income is very limited and it is natural to look at the cheapest option, I am wondering in view of the negative publicity of UKOnline whether we should tighten our financial belts and pay the extra for the reliability of Tesco. We are in the Manchester area if any other Mancunians can give any feedback on the reliability on these two providers, or any other positive ones around the same price. We already have the hardware as we have Internet sharing for our PC's.

Use this checker to see if you can get any LLU products at your exchange. You've probably seen UKOnline offer 512Kbps for £9.99pm.

Also, take a look at e7even.com - can be very cheap. Mixed reviews - good seem to outweigh the bad.

Finally, take a look at PlusNet - well known company. Good for those that download much, and don't use P2P that much. Their lowest ADSL package is £14.99 for up to 2Mbps (Broadband Plus).

    Hope this helps.
  • I was with Tesco dial up and took up the BB when it started and have been very happy with it.

I think the offer at the moment is if you take their Telephone service you pay £14.49 for the BB, check the website though for the current offer.

The Telephone service as a CPS is not great but use the 1st package where you pay no monthly charge and combine it with 18866 for all your calls and you should be quids in icon7.gif

I use PlusNet as my Broadband provider - they have won awards for best internet provider. I've been with them about 4 yrs first for dial up and now broadband and have only ever had 1 hiccup which was whilst I was changing over and they dealt with that really well and gave me a free month.

They have a £14.99 per month package (2mb and free set up) - they also have email, internet and phone help facilities - the phone one being an 0845 number for both customer services and technical support which is really good. I recently got a new computer and had problems with email and they were 30 mins on the phone trouble shooting with me which was great.

If you are interested I'd be happy to recommend you (there is a small finders fee) - PM me if you're interested

or you could go straight to the web-site https://www.plus.net
  • Thanks for your replies so far.

I have done quite a bit of research prior to my post, and it seems for every good reccomendation, there is a not so good one. It really seems to be a mine field doesn't it? As there doesn't seem to be much about for Tesco, in the way of reviews or knocks, I am presuming it is fairly reliable. Most of the others seem to have such extremes. Brilliant to rubbish. Had a look at plusnet but it seem there are some restrictions. E7even has a connection fee and requires yearly payment up front which we couldn't afford. Although I am still tempted by UKonline, there still seems to be too much going wrong with disgruntled customers. Whatever you do folks do NOT recommend Tiscali. We were with them when they were Worldonline, and when they were taken over they went up the wall. It is a long story that although eventually ended well, put us through great stress and trauma due to their ineptness. Never again.

  • Have a look at Wanadoo . No probs in the 2 years I've been with them , but new deals due soon as Wanadoo and Orange are coming out of the closet together and 're-labeling' themselves with some new deals . If you have an Orange mobile , should be worth a look .

  • Thanks for the advice but I wouldn't ever go with Wanadoo. This is because Iwas with them when they were Freeserve, and I had nothing but trouble with obscene e-mail links and threatening legal e-mails due to the way they devise their e-mail addresses for customers. Most companies allow you to do something like this: myname@isp.co.uk. With Freeserve it is something like this:myname@username.isp.co.uk. This resulted that you could put any prefix befor the username and it would go to the person who has the username. Hope that makes sense. Freeserve/Wanadoo said that the "my name" person, who I managed to find an account number for didn't exist, and it was only the "username" person (namely me) that did. They would do absolutely nothing to help track this person down. Add to that the continual dropped connections, no thank you:-/
