Help with a double glazed window!

My daughter opened her bedroom window this morning, said she couldn't close it again, so I thought nothing of it, until I've just been in there hoovering and tidying. It was sticky the other day and I really had to pull it hard to close it.

It's opens out from the bottom, but one side of the window (not the actual window, the metal piece which secures the window to the frame), is all bent!!

The thing that's causing the window not to close though, it the little brass thing on the bottom, on one side. It keeps catching on the frame, and I can't see how I can get it off (just so I can close and secure the window)

Does anyone know if I can get this off please??

Just found a pic to explain what I mean, because I know the above must sound confusing sorry! The brass panel showing on the side, it's one of those stoppers in the slidey thing which is stopping the window from closing.

    Balls!

It's not the little brass thing, it's the hinge, it's all bent and warped, God knows how!

Can you buy replacement hinges?? This has happened before but the other side of the window and for a guy to come out and fix it cost £70 3 years ago :(

Can't you bend the hinge back into shape?

Once they are bent out of shape, they will never go back properly, a new stay is required I am afraid.

It is caused by pulling on one side of the window, instead of pulling it centrally.

I would agree with Inactive on this one, however, depending on size, the hinges are normally a fairly standard item and I beleive (havent checked yet) that Screwfix do them. They are often known as Friction hinges. If you get stuck I have some suppliers who may be able to help. Whilst a bit fiddly, it's not impossible by any means to replace them your self.

How could that be though, you can't pull the window to one side when opening and closing it as the handle is central

Thanks, I'll have a quick look at Screwfix! :)

EDIT, they have them! Would I need top hung or side hung?

The window opens at the bottom, outwards. (It's just the one large bedroom window, fire escape type)

Sounds like it's top hung - where are hinges - on the top or side of the window?

Is it an actual fire escape one? These have special features such as extra wide opening, quick release catches etc. Also as Man has just asked where are the hinges and are they attached to the side of the window. You will also need to measure the closed lenght (approx)

The window doesn't have a quick release catch?

The hinges are on the sides.

OH has been to screwfix and has got some friction hinges, so hopefully we'll get the ladders out tomorrow and fix the new ones (she says, with fingers crossed ;))

Well it must have been pulled awkwardly, if closed properly via the central handle, this cannot happen, that is assuming it was not bent beforehand of course.
