Help I have a virus that my software doesn't see

If you slag off Norton you gain kudos on the board - although that said it has in my experience been very resource intensive, not to mention down right impossible to get rid off. If you want to pay for AV then Nod32 is my weapon of choice.
To get rid of all traces of Norton simply download the appropriate Norton Removal tool from the Symantec website.
Its good practice even if you are upgrading to a newer version.

I'm not going to 'slag off' Norton - it works when it works - but it does get deeply inside the PC system and can cause problems if a conflict takes place. It's also resource-intensive (as mentioned earlier) and will generally slow your system more than other AV software packages. Because it's so ingrained, it can be hell to remove if it goes AWOL, and I've had to format machines as a last resort (I used to build systems).
AVG 7.5 is fine and is the same version that many 'pro' end-users use, minus the support backup - but Grisoft has its own free support forums, if you need it.
Also try Arovax Antispyware - free from www.arovax.com - a v.good spyware/malware remover, with a tiny resource use, and scintillatingly fast in use.
Don't confuse viruses with spyware/malware; they're different kettles of fish, and an AV package (Norton AV, AVG etc) won't necessarily flag up spyware and won't find anything wrong during a scan, if spyware is the culprit. For this, use Antispyware, as mentionedIt's 4 In The Morning :j0 -

Yes, I have had to use the "utilities" in the past - how many programs need a removal tool to get rid of them?! Is it because the AV needs deep hooks into your system or the coders at Symantec think they can own your machine?
Either way it's bad.
Oh noes - now I'm slagging off Norton

Lots of programs need removal tools - if you uninstall anything from the Windows control panel, you'll use 'em! Personally, I love Norton - the JPS was something to be admired. It's 4 In The Morning :j0
