23K 'wiped-off' in 6 months...drastic but quick way to get rid of debt

i agree with the newbie above.
while everyone is entitled to an opinion, i do feel that some peoples harsh responses here would stop any newbies now considering bankruptcy from posting, for fear of being accused of taking the easy way out .
i asked for some advice a few nights ago and was really comforted and encouraged by the support and answers i got
it motivated me and i have taken several steps to try to avoid bankruptcy - but it could still happen - and it would be down to irresponsible spending and not learning the value of money over the last 20 years - i would hope that if i posted again and admitted my mistakes i would still get the support offered the first time around instead of the accusations seen above.0 -

I totally agree with you, some people's attitude to this stinks!
I wonder how some of the people who disagree would fair living in another country!
But of course they all seem so perfect!!In this trusted place U can erase
Every tear that ever rolled down your weary face
All the time U waste in that paper chase
Is time better spent in these arms of mine0 -

I'm sure you would get support for doing it, as you are obviously trying to explore other options first. Also, I'm sure you wouldn't gloat about it the way the OP seems to have done. I think that is where the OP has caused a stir - the apparent lack of remorse and boast about how easy it was to do. I know it is an option for us, and we could go bankrupt easily. If things got worse I would consider it, but at the moment I am doing same as you and trying to avoid it. The OP doesn't anywhere mention that his GF has learned her lesson and deeply regrets getting into so much debt, and I think people understand bankruptcy more where people genuinely use it as last resort and are genuinely regretful of their situation which got them into the mess.
Good luck on the path of repaying, hope you can make it all the way.Official DFW Nerd #148

Seems to me that some people don't care what was actually written.
They've made their minds up on bankrupcy/bankrupts - hence the nastyness.0 -

orthopod wrote:Sarcasm is not lost on OP I can see. Lots of posts from him justifying the holiday but not a single post about where the debt went. There is an attempt, I can see, to bring into picture a small naive village girl whom all the animals in the bank shewed and spat out. What exactly did she spend it on ? Prolly spent the whole lot of perfumes and wine I think. OP, take a look at some of the threads. You will find lots of people livign virtually in poverty, having kids to feed, disabled, trying every possible methods to repay. They can all go the easy route you advised your GF. I take a bow at them. If any of them had come and said they had gone through bankruptc I would understand. Kids should not suffer for some mistakes their parents did. What does your GF have to show ? She has coem from her village to this country and thought she got her hands on mega bucks. I bet you stayed in some 5 star hotel and had champagne to celebrate your freedom, all funded by the loans your GF took out irresponsibly.
Orthopod....if you read back on some of the posts you'll see how she arrived in the situation she did. We're not all 'worldly-wise' & 'street-wise'. She got herself in a mess which has now been resolved.
The purpose of the original post was to tell the board what occured. I have tried to 're-title' the thread as it was not worded that well-no intention gloat at all. Yes-we've stayed in some GREAT 5 star Hotels as I get them FREE with my job....champagne not my tipple i'm afraid. certainly not the easy option if you read back. Methinks this thread has been 'hijacked' by those being confrontational just for the sake??! Just a thought (!) Oh...learn to write-'Prolly spent the whole lot of perfumes and wine I think'??! If your points are to be taken seriously learn the english language....0 -
Whilst I would agree that some people on this thread are being rather accusatory I can understand why. I declared myself bankrupt 18 months ago and have posted on here what it was like and what people could expect from bankruptcy. I was careful, however, to avoid sounding smug, which is how the OP sounded in the first post. However, the OP has noted that and as tried to change the title of the post, with little success. A lesson learned!
In my opinion every person is different and deals with their problems in their own way. Whilst this forum is an open discussion I do feel that there are some people on here that are quite harsh and could put others off.
With reference to the holiday - are people suggesting that bankrupts cannot have holidays????? Especially if the bankrupt person didn't pay for it! Mind you, I do hope that the bankrupt didn't take along a CC for spending money - LOL.0 -
i think it was the immense relief that came out when he wrote the thread, not gloating he was relieved and probably could not belive it himself, how easy it was and is.but she will still have to live with being a 'bankrupt' for many years and probably does feel ashamed.
i have read lots of threads varius forums and to me it's the relief that it is all over, not gloats.
he is a new poster give him a chance.0 -
For the final time...no gloating was intended. It has been said in earlier messages that she's learned her lesson-the whole thing made her quite ill.
I did try & change the title. One thing I am happy about as i care for my other 1/2 is that it's all over & her health won't suffer. Everyone has their own choices to make re: bankruptcy, paying debts off, etc.
Come on now guys/gals....seems the thread has got a tad to personal. The information on the original post may help someone else or be of interest to others. There seems to be a very old fashioned view on Bankruptcy...it no longer has the stigma once attached to it.
In fact...a lot of professional advisors reccommend it in many cases. Have a look at http://www.debtquestions.co.uk/forum/index.php3 to see what I mean.
Ok......a question! How many of you have huge debts, but no equity/assets (by this I mean big assets-like new cars, etc...second hand cars/tv's etc do not count) or savings & have no excess income after essentials & debts paid?? You may have negotiated a debt-management-plan or an IVA but it will take you six years or more to fully clear the debts. How may of you are being made ill by constant phone calls/threats etc are on anti-depressents? If you have no kids either then why put yourself through it for 6-10 years when it will be done with in one year maximum??? The only answer to that is that you want to feel you've done the right thing', paid it all off' etc.. If you genuinely have no other way to clear your debts why not bankruptcy?? To my mind it's just a moral thing...as the PRACTICAL emotionless answer (based on the above circumstances) is that Bankruptcy is the quickest and easiest option. .
Obviously if you'd lose your house & had kids, etc, lots of equity/excess income it's not the best option as the ramifications affect the children as well.
I'm not saying all should go BR but it pays to know that it can be an option.0 -
well if i could turn the clock back 41/2 years i would go bankrupt0
