You could cover your possessions via your household insurance, and there are firms that covers against cancellation - eg Schofields.

But it might be cheaper to take ordinary travel insurance (which will include the medical cover which you won't be claiming against).

I had thought of taking out insurance with the medical cover but that would mean that i would have to tell a white lie or two regarding my medical condition, which i suppose if they found out could nullify any other claim.
Will have a look at Schofields though.

    Thanks

    I have 2 questions.

Why do you have to lie? Can't you just tell the truth and accept exclusions? or do you mean it's just loads of hassle to fill in forms etc.

Secondly if you have an accident totally unrelated to your existing condition then would you not want to be covered?
I guess you can use the European card for reciprocal arrangements but it doesn't cover everything for example it doesn't cover ambulances in certain countries.
If you need re-patriation or relatives to travel to see you then this certainly won't be paid for under the "nhs" reciprocal arrangements.
There are lots of things that could happen (like an accident) that would be totally unrelated to any previous condition.

    Hi lisyloo

For instance the P.O. would just load their premium if i told them about my heart problem.I have the Eur NHS card and i feel fine with that. What i really want to insure is cancellation ( what with this fuel shortage business and the fact that our apartment is £200 a day) I 'm just a bit concerned that no fuel ( if it came to that) would mean that my £1400 would go down the swanny.
I suppose if you or someone reassures me enough i can forget about the whole thing:o

It is always worth insuring against cancellation.

Lots of things can happen to stop you getting away at the last minute.

eg Accident, or someone close to you may be taken seriously ill etc.

I guess it's up to you but I see some potential costs that could be much greater than cancellation.
e.g. if you need to be repatriated (dead or alive) that could cost a lot more.
If you are very ill and want relatives to visit then that will not be covered by anything except insurance.

The health costs could be a lot more than the cancellation.

Obviously it's entirely up to you but the cancellation is fairly limited compared to what the medical costs could be.
I suppose if you or someone reassures me enough i can forget about the whole thing

Sorry but in all conscience I couldn't do that.
The costs could be very high, so in your situation I would accept a loaded premium or holiday in the UK (sorry).

If you have not had any hostpital treatment for the heart condition in the last 12 months, or has been seen by a specialist in the last 3 months other than for regular check ups The British Mountaineering Coucil will cover you. I would read the conditions carefully but I am taking it out later in the year, you have to be a member but it is half price at the moment @ £14.75 each the policys are quite reasonable.
  • Hi Niccy

Did you by any chance find anyone to insure you without medical cover ? I am in the same predicament, two of us are travelling to Jersey by ferry in a few weeks. I have a pre-existing medical condition and my friend is over 80.
I just want the travel insurance without the medical insurance which we are prepared to take the risk with.
Does such a thing exist ?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Globelink.co.uk offers different level of covers, you can choose according to your suitability. You can try this company.
  • Different providers take different approaches to pre-existing conditions from flat out declining cover, through excluding cover for pre-existings to loading premiums but providing cover.

It would be sensible to take the middle ground option as if the worst happens and for example you sustain a major injury you may not want to be stuck in hospital in Holland for 9 months where as travel insurance would pay to repatriate you once stablised even though it would require specialist medical staff/ equipment/ plane etc.
