isn't these benefits the OP is referring to exactly to do what is doing to her? helping her to look after her child and help families to be there to raise your child on your own and be a family, part of a society, not as it was long ago as some other members have said with no help from the goverment.
The same way our taxes go to pay for the pensions of the elder people, your parent? nannys? etc.
when I retire, I will collect my pension from the taxes collected from the people who is working, same as I do for my eldest now.
I suppose no one thinks your income tax part of the funding of your pension is deposited in a bank to be returned to you when you retire.
I am actually proud I work and pay my taxes and is used for these porpuses, although I have to admit there are people who abuse them and it's them who we need to tackle and finger point.
with all due respect to anyone who may be affected, but (depending on circunstances) who want children raised by extrangers or not having the opporttunity to be in a family home with dad or mom?
Let's think about the children who will benefit of the CTC benefit by having personal care from parents instead of the "mother" who can but won't go to work.
obviusly is clear I agree in this circunstances to take the benefits and don't go to work, your child and family deserves it. Who has children of their own knows that to be a real parent is a full time job.
    I hope I'm making a point here.

Right, I would just like to add the following:
I have worked ever since leaving school in well paid jobs and never claimed benefits before claiming Maternity Allowance which I was duly entitled to.
I own my own house thereby paying a mortgage
I do not receive any housing benefit, JSA, Council Tax relief etc.
As mentioned I have never claimed a penny from yours or my paid taxes before.
However, the Government are offering me the same money to stay at home and look after my child as I would if I was working. So, to help my 9 month old baby grow up in a loving family, play and have one to one care with her, it's not a difficult decision.
I fully intend to go back to work when she is old enough to appreciate nursery and get something out of it.
The moral side of working is not really relevant for me as she would not see me working as I would be cramming in a night job when she will be asleep.
I fully appreciate everyones comments but please do not lump me in the same category as someone who has never had a job and expects tax payers to support them.
The Government make up these rules, not me

    :T :T :T :T

    Yep, you sure are.

I was a single parent after my marriage break up.

Does that make me a bad parent because I went back to work?

Should I have shown my daughter that the correct thing to do would be to live on benefits?

Good job there are mothers prepared to work, otherwise there might not be enough money in the kitty to pay for the mums who are not prepared to work, to stay at home:rolleyes:

    ***Boardguide comment***

The original post was a question about Tax Credits.

Please note Martin's take on things in this post.

For those of you who haven't read it or have forgotten, it says:
Its about helping people get their entitlement! Not about benefits policy!

This board is here for help and support for those on or looking to claim benefits, not for judgement.

Of course we all know the benefits system is a mess

Whatever you're political persuasion, we're all aware the benefits system is a mess. Whether its the malpayments of tax credits on one hand, benefit fraud on the other hand, or simply the fact that sometimes it doesn't pay to work - everyone has their grumble.

This board is here to help people with their money though..

Yet that isn't what this board is for. It's here to help people find out what they are entitled to under the current system, and to help them get it. Benefits do provide a lifeline for many, and this site is here to help people with their money, and not to judge. Of course, how to illegally defraud the benefits system shouldn't be discussed here, but ensuring you're getting your entitlement is exactly what its about.

Want to discuss the benefits system? Go to the discussion board

If you want to discuss the benefits system itself and issues around it, the appropriate place isn't here but the Discussion Board and even there, please remember courtesy and not to make it personal about anyone. This site's prime purpose it to help people with their money and I will always act to protect that.

    Thanks for your co-operation

    Martin
