  • Fine, I think we will both have to just disagree on this and end the debate!!

One thing to maybe consider is will the experience help you get a job when you want to go back to work for longer hours? A future potential employer would probably hire somebody that has been working part time for a few years rather than somebody that has taken a complete 'career' break for a few years. Are there skills used in this part time work that you can see being transferable and valued by a future employer?
  • After reading this thread and the comments, I just want to say that it makes me sick when I read about people claiming benefits.

All people are concerned about is getting something for nothing! Greed nothing but greed. Want more, more, more!!!

If you choose to have children then make sure you can afford them before you get into bed. Why should the government pay you for having children! No wonder the country is full to the brim of people all trying to claim for things that they're not morally entitled to. The benefits system was originally designed as a method of financial support for the NEEDY! and destitute and it should revert back to it.

People say they have no money....they have no money because they spend too much on things that they don't need and the lastest must haves.
You speak to anyone who says they have no money and ask them, do they have a television ? car ? mobile phones ? when was their last holiday ?, when was the last time they went out drinking, or for a meal, when was the last time they bought a new item of clothing (that they did not need)! People of today don't know they're born.

Go back 40 years and as a child you were lucky if you had a pair of new shoes. Most people wore second hand clothes, shoes, funiture was second hand. But guess what, people were alot nicer to know than now. That's what a real British person was made of.

Most people today are greedy, selfish, ignorant, arrogant, self obsessed, wasteful and not only want, want , want but I demand and that's mine, mine, I'm entitled to it and the younger they are the worse they are. Well guess what, your entitled to nothing unless you work for the money and pay for it.

I just noticed the job is 20 hours per week, 2 nights. Am I right that it is 10 hours per night

With a baby you will be exhausted and suffer jet lag the rest of the week if you are working through the night. Money is important, but keeping the family happy and intact is more so. I think a job like this could really affect your family life as you may end up very grumpy and irritable.

Exactly. The OP shouldn't have to justify herself to anyone. I wonder how many of the ones jumping on her back could manage a part time job, work for 10 hours 2 nights a week and then have to cope with a tiny baby the next again day as her partner IS OUT WORKING. So essentially, HIS tax money is paying into the pot that their WTC/CTC is paid from.

OP please don't get disheartened. You asked a reasonable question and I agree with you completely that the job of a parent is far more important than anything at this crucial age. As you say, you don't make the rules - the goverment does. I work and I claim WTC/CTC and I am so grateful for these 'benefits' as it gives me the opportunity to go out to work.

You have plenty time to go to work when the baby is older - at least you were looking at the possibility.

    Good luck :) x

What - even more grumpy and irritable than she is now after some of the snide comments on this thread!

There seems to be two camps with this subject, and I shouldn't think any of us are likely to cross to the other side. However, the OP did ask the question and I'm sure she didn't expect everyone to say, 'Go for it, girl!'

cornishfairy is of course entitled to the benefits she mentions, but I just think it's regrettable that the government has got us into a situation where someone can think to themselves, 'I really need to boost my income. Now, shall I get a job - or shall I claim benefit? Hmm, let me see...'
  • Hi, I have been biting my lip as I said I didn't really wish to continue this but I couldn't help myself on one last point. Some of you are right. I want to work nights so that I can have the best of both worlds, my baby won't even notice I am gone. I am prepared to exhaust myself for the benfit of my family. But after speaking to the tax people they have confirmed that I would only receive £20 per week, so worse off. I understand this is a moral argument but the judgement is not ours, that is for the MP's etc to change. I am merely working within the system provided. If they did not give me any money, then obviously I would work as stated above. My taxes for the last 15 years have gone towards other peoples benefits, where's my share when I want them. I would also just like to add that I am neither greedy, selfish, or anything else that may has been suggested and MY MUM LOVES ME!!

If that is your opinion then fair enough, take it up with your MP. But I do not think the way you answered the OP was appropriate - no need for an answer dripping with so much sarcasm.

The majority of people claiming WTC either work or are in a relationship with a partner who works so your precious tax money is safe - we are all paying into the system.;)

Pray to god you never find yourself in a situation where you need to rely completely on benefits as these words you say may have a hollow meaning.:o

We voted these idiots in power, we only have ourselves to blame for this shambolic benefit system.

A system where for many millions its much better to scrounge than to work.

O.P that is not aimed at you, i genuinally see you have a work ethic about you and you've already stated that you will return to work.

Some mums stay on income support all their life and have no intention of ever getting a job.

Makes my blood boil but its the idiots in power that is letting this happen.
