Instant insurance ?
Options
Going to look at a car on Saturday - private sale. It's a long way away so if I like it I'll probably buy it on the spot ( if not I'll be coming home on the train). I've got an online insurance quote for it today that's tucked away and valid for 30 days. Question is, will I be able to activate the insurance cover straight away so I can drive it home legally ?

Are you currently insured...?
If so, then you should be covered 3rs party to drive another car...0 -

but only if you don't own it0 -
You don't own it as far as the DVLA are aware.0

As long as the insurance company is open when you are ready to drive off then yes they will be able to start cover straight away.
If in doubt, just give the company a call before hand.0 -
The DVLA don't record ownership, only who the registered keeper is. As far as the Police will be concerned, the OP will own it and not be insured.0

I'm not currently insured as they cancelled my policy after my previous car was written off (not me at fault BTW).
Quote is from an internet only insurance brand but I dare say I can find a phone number somewhere to ask.
Thanks for the responses.0 -
When bought my car I had a quote saved (it was M&S Money, for what it mattered). I used the guy I bought it off's internet access (cheeky as hell I know) to buy the policy. AFAIK I was insured from the second I bought the policy. At least I hope I was, because I drove the car home!
Cheers

Two things should exist before the above can be correct:
1. The driver should have a comprehensive policy on another car to be able to drive other people's cars with owner's permission.
2. The car should have an insurance policy of it's own before anybody else can drive it on their own policy, which will be limited to third party only.
To the OP, if you have another car and and it is insured through a fully comprehensive policy by yourself, then you may drive the new car back home, provided the car has it's own policy insurance by the seller.
Legally, you will be the owner and your other policy will not cover you, but, on the way home ANPR systems will recognise the car as insured if the seller's insurnce was in place i.e hasn't expired yet. However, if the unthinkable happens, you will not have any cover whatsoever.
As to instant insurance cover, you can either call the company there and then or ask somebody at home to purchase the insurance for you online and make sure they enter the time you want the policy to start if possible, but you might stay over night if the policy doesn't start till midnight.
Good luck
Edit: I have just seen that you don't have an insurance policy of your own! I had a phone call while I was replying!lolBe nice, life is too short to be anything else.0 -
