I've had a look and I don't think the graphics card that is built into your motherboard can support 1440 x 900. When you get a panel you really want a DVI connection to do it, as that gives you a much sharper picture than VGA, so you'll need to go for a new graphics card.

I'm presuming from what I've seen on dxdiag that your computer has an AGP slot for a graphics card, and brand new you're looking at £35 for one that can output at 1440 x 900 with DVI. If you use ebay, you could probably get it for much less.

I'm beginning to quite like my 17" CRT.

Maplin are usually quite pricey. Don't worry, there are still graphics cards that are made brand new for AGP and as I said you could really bag a bargain on Ebay if you go second hand.

Can you find out the model of your motherboard and I'll find you some cards that will work and get you on 1440 x 900 if you still want to

OK, here we go. Is this gfx card suitable?

It's an Nvidia® Geforce 5200 128MB Graphics Card, with
- AGP 8x 128MB DDR
- VGA and DVI output and S-Video TV

And the FAQ page confirms it can handle 1400x900 (I'm willing to take a punt that they mean 1440... or that it is at least capable of that as well...)

My motherboard is ASUSTeK Computer INC. A7NVM400 Rev 2.xx, and I *think* this is it:

which says that it has AGP 8X. (It's a A7N8X-VM/400) This was the closest I could find on the Asus site.

I realise I can't ask for a definite confirmation on the above information - and in any case I certainly wouldn't hold anyone responsible for any such advice - it is entirely my responsibility to ensure I'm buying what I need. But a hint that I'm barking up the right tree would be much appreciated ;-)

Edit: You posted before I did. To prove what a numbnut I am I was looking at the wrong cards on Maplin when I posted the above. And I thought I'd deleted this (I deleted the link to the page that I'd pasted in!)

I like Maplin and have bought from them before. I'm always happy to pay a premium for a company I like. (I don't think John Lewis sell gfx cards though...) And there's a Maplin 500 yards from where I work :-)

Seriously m8 that card is prehistoric. Dont get me wrong they were realy good card's (about 10 years ago). Also will your MOBO support a newer 1.5v card, because thats about all you'll get these days unless you look second hand on EBAY.........

Well I only want to run a bigger monitor off it, not play Crysis3 or whatever the gaming mags use for benchmarking these days!

If I found the right MOBO on the Asus site then it says it is a 1.5v AGP8X.

Although I've just noticed my PSU is 350w. The FAQs for that card says they recommend a 400w minimum although they told someone 350w should be OK (for a different card I was looking at).

Nuffink's simple is it?!

350w is enough. Im runnin a 512Mb 7300gt on a 400w and that more than enough juice. Most PSU's are ok, unless you got something realy cheap and nasty you should have no problems.
