Monitor resolutions and PC compatibility

This is probably a really stupid question but I can't find a definitive answer by Googling or asking a couple of techy friends.

I want to get a 19" monitor, with 1440x900 resolution (as they're widely available more than anything else). However, I am unsure if my PC (onboard graphics) will support this resolution. I don't want to use any other resolution as TFTs look fuzzy if you don't display them at their native resolution.

I searched through the resolutions my PC will support (including unticking the 'Hide resolutions my monitor doesn't support') and it offers the following (around the aforementioned resolution):

1360x768
1600x900

There is no 1440 horizontal offered. Its highest is 1600x1024. Also, the 1440x900 is 8:5 aspect ratio - none of the resolutions offered by my PC are 8:5 (or 16:10 if you prefer).

One messageboard thread I found had a guy whose fairly top end gfx card wouldn't support this resolution and he eventually solved it by installing Powerstrip. I don't really want to do this - I'd compromise and buy a monitor that has the same resolution as one of the ones my PC does (state it) supports.

Comments? Advice? I realise I should probably supply the type of gfx card, and its driver details but I'm a bit thick when it comes to this. However, as much as I understand it, Belarc Advisor says this:

NVIDIA GeForce4 MX Integrated GPU [Display adapter]
NVIDIA Driver Helper Service, Version 45.23 Version 6.14.10.4523

For the record, I currently use a 17" CRT, and have it on 1024x768.

Thanks a lot for any help :-)

    Had a quick look here:

    http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/winxp_2k_93.71_uk.html

    Looks like the resolutions you quote are the closest you can get to your required resolution with your setup.

    Try the automatic upgrade on that site to make sure you have the latest version.

    I thought Nvidia allowed for custom resolutions but I don't have it anymore so can't check that

    I would have thought the monitor manufacturer would provide a .inf file to enable you to access the native resolution.

    Thanks very much for this reply. I tried updating and sure enough it installed new drivers (NVIDIA Driver Helper Service, Version 93.71 Version 6.14.10.9371).

    And I now have some 8:5 possibilities:
    1920x1200
    1280x800
    960x600

    But not the elusive 1440x900 !! I can now also go up to 2048x1536 (4:3).

    I tried following the Help Screen for the advanced settings in the Nvidia Control Panel but it didn't give me an option for "Display Settings (advanced)" - which is where it said I would find settings not supported by by monitor. But I had already noted these settings by unticking the relevant box as described in my first post. I think this was all it was going to offer me - not the opportunity to literally type in my own Horizontal and Vertical values.

    Strange... I don't fancy buying a monitor if it's not going to display properly. Although I use a 20" 1600x1200 (4:3) at work (and love it!) so I could look into getting one of those, as that is now supported.

    Can I just confirm? By viewing the resolutions that my monitor can't handle (as described in my first post) am I not viewing ALL the resolutions that my gfx card (and drivers) CAN handle?

    In other words, regardless of what my monitor can or can't cope with, it can only display what my gfx card can send to it?

    Correct.

    1440 x 900 is taxing on a graphics card.

    1280 x 800 is the same aspect ratio though.

    Thanks for that. That's something else that I had at the back of my mind. I only have 512MB RAM. Would upping my resolution require more 'umph' ? This PC is a few years old now. What details would I need to post? I have:

    1.85 gigahertz AMD Sempron
    64 kilobyte primary memory cache
    256 kilobyte secondary memory cache

    under the Processor heading on Belarc Advisor. The resolutions being considered are (with overall pixels):

    1600x1200=1,920,000
    1440x900=1,296,000
    1280x960=1,228,800
    Present:
    1024x768=786,432

    As you can see, they're all a fair step up from my current resolution. I don't use this PC for gaming, video editing, or anything too labour intensive.
  • Ok, to give us a full picture of your system;

    Click Start > Run and type dxdiag.

    Let it load up, then click the button 'Save All Information". Save that as a text file, then copy and paste it in here and I'll take a look.
