Want a baby - See doctor first?

You are advised to see your doctor before you start trying to conceive, however many people don't as they either don't see the need or it happens before they get round to going!
You definately need to start taking folic acid, and if either of you smoke, give up. You also should be within a normal range BMI (18.5-25).
Spend lots of time in the bedroom!0 -
glad someone mentioned rubella however it isnt just a case that you have had the jabs, I would ask for an immunity test to make sure.
I had my jab at 13 like most girls, however my little brother had german measles when i was 11 weeks pg with my first baby and as i was a young girl who lived at home it was a problem, thankfully i was covered and had immunity however when tested with my 4th baby for immunity when pregnancy i had no immunity so had to be careful, they wanted to jab me before i left the maternity hospital but i had so many jabs when i had my 4th and knew she was my last I said no....however they made me promise to have another jab if i ever wanted another baby.
just ask for a full blood count and leave 3 mths from coming off the pill to even start trying to conceive purely because it helps thicken the womb lining back up to what it should be, my cousin suffered a couple of m/c when she fell the first month, however when she left it three mths she was fine, her doctors suggested this...it just gives you body time to adjust to normal.
good luck!!0 -
When i was 23 I had a booster for rubella, and I am a week shy of turning 30.
Weight not in the healthy weight range and I was a little worried about this.
I didn't realise the points about conceiving too early after coming off the pill.
May book that docs appointment now then i think0 -
I went to see the nurse rather than GP before ttc. She gave me the blood test to check I was still immune to rubella. She told me if I needed a booster I would need to wait 6 months before ttc - so I was relieved I was still immune but I thought I would let you know. She went through what to eat when pregnant (as I tried to stick to it as much as pos when ttc just in case I fell) she also talked to me about folic acid etc and any worries I had. She also gave me the pregnancy book that you get at your booking in appointment with midwife - I was so glad I had this early as they wouldn't give me a booking in appointment until I was atleast 8 wks pregnant. good luck!:DSAHM Mummy tods (born Oct 2007) and dd (born June 2010)0

My husband and I went to see our GP for advice when we decided to try and she arranged for me to have bloods checked for immunity, advised I come off the pill and aim for a 3 month break before trying and to take folic acid from that day on just to be on the safe side. We left a 3 months break as advised (had been on the pill since 13 years old for heavy periods and was 28 when we started trying) and fell pregnant the first month of trying following our last blow out holiday of a lifetime to Canada!!!!Wife/Mother of two gorgeous boys/Full-time A&E Coordinator/Home-start Support Worker/Open University Student/Wannabe Midwife = a busy yet fulfilled life!! :rotfl:0

Don't count on it! We started trying in Sept, thinking it would take a few months & then I'd be due the following Sept/Oct. DD arrived start of August:rotfl:0

Vix - no it isn't allowed to have your partner as your doctor, officially!
Just a point about the pill - in the first month after coming off the pill you can be extra fertile. It has been used as a boost to some people trying to conceive with no luck in the past.
As for the weight - yes in an ideal world you would be an ideal weight, but this is the real world. Perhaps a BMI of under 30 might be wise, but I wouldn't let it stop you.0
