Want a baby - See doctor first?

Options
Hello all,

I know there are various threads about trying to conceive, once you are pregnant etc.

Hubby and I have pretty much made the decision to start trying for a baby. I had mentioned this to my doctor on a previous visit and he said come and see me when you want to come off the pill.

My question is, is it a good idea to go and see the doc first, before getting pregnant to discuss any issues? I know I will need to look at the folic acid situation etc.

Just looking for thoughts from those more experienced in this than I

Thanks for your time.

well I've never visited a doctor before getting pregnant....I found spending time with my husband was a lot more useful than a doc's appointment :D

It's a good idea to start taking folic acid now, you don't have to wait until you are trying or indeed are pregnant.

If you take a daily multivitamin, change this to a pregnancy suitable one, as too much vitamin A is bad for babies.

Take up smoking and drinking, then you'll have lots of kids very easily. Chavs across the country swear by it...

    Hey!

A lot of gp's advise that you start taking folic acid three months before getting pregnant, so i'd start taking it now ready for when you do become pregnant.

I didnt go to my gp specificly about TTC, it just worked out that i needed my yearly check up and i mentionned TTC. If you're in good health, you probably wont really need to discuss it. If you're on any medication-id check though, and make sure your blood pressure is ok etc.

The best things to do yourself is to eat healthily, exercise, keep stress levels down and have regular sex once you do try to conceive. same goes for your OH-he needs to keep healthy too!

    Good luck!

    keely.

I think it's worth a try. To be honest the doctor will be able to advis you on diet/lifestyle etc. as well as suppliments so it's worth doing. Make sure you ask for the family planning specialist when you make the appointment tho. Most surgeries will have a specific doctor who deals with these things.Good luck.X

The other thing my GP checked was that my immunisations for rubella were up to date (and they weren't, so I was glad I went in)
    That's Numberwang!

Thank you to everyone for answering what might be a silly question to most.

I am up to date with immunisations so I feel okay about thought.

As for healthy eating, working on that due to other things.

Stress -- big point for me here. have quite a stressful job and am alwasys stressed person so will make big efforts to relax more.
