Plus net - £40.00 activation fee. I took out a 12 month agreement with Plusnet paying £9.99 a month. Due to unforeseen circumstances I will be moving address. Having contacted Plusnet to transfer my broadband to the new phone number I discovered they charge an activation fee of £40.00. What a rip-off, day light robbery.
These lot are taking the pee, if I want to cancel then you have to pay the 'free' initial activation fee of £40.00 plus £30 for the rubbish router.
This bunch are even recommended by this site, I say - stay away.

If theres no broadband at the existing property then it needs to be activated.
It isn't a switch at the exchange that does it, physical work is carried out at the exchange0 -
Hi there,
Every ISP that resells a BT Wholesale product, such as IPStream Max, is charged £40 to activate a broadband service on a telephone line. We allow you to "defer" this when you initially signup, although you are also given the option to pay this fee up front. If you leave within a year, we charge the £40 as a cancellation fee.
I promise you that it's actually pretty common practice throughout the industry.“Official Company Representative

I do not see what your problem is, it appears to be all of your own making.
When you signed up you were given the option of paying the activation fee or stay for 12 months and you were informed of the situation should you leave/move. Did you not read what you agreed to ?
The £40 pound activation fee is what BT charge Plusnet to connect your line to the system, Plusnet have to pay it, but they absorb it if you stay for the 12 months.
So you move to a new house, BT will charge the activation fee again as it is now a new connection, some one has to do work in the exchange which has to be paid for.
It is not Plusnet or BTs fault that you are moving premises.
Only if leaving would you be charged for the "router rubbish" as you call it, but again you had the choice to supply your own or have theirs when you signed up.0 -

Correct and the free activation is deferred over 12 months so if you leave you would be required to pay for the first activation same as most ISP's - Wholesale charge is £40 for an IPStream activation.
On a side note: I work for PlusNet though this is posed off shift and i am not being paid by PlusNet to post - This post nor do any of my posts reflect in anyway the views of PlusNet. I wanted to make this clear as i want a job when i go back to work

Actually he said "plus £30 for the rubbish router" which is a rip off if Joe Public can buy a good wireless router for this price, Plusnet charging £30 for a one port router is extortion!

You have to weigh in the fact that if 12 months are fulfilled, then that router is free. Profit margins on Broadband are insanely tight and whilst, yes, you can get the router cheaper elsewhere, in many cases it is free.“Official Company Representative

If the OP moves house and stays with PlusNet for the original 12 months, the router is still free. It only "costs" £30 if you leave within the 12 months.
Unfortunately, it is BT who charge the £40 for moving house. ISPs have to recover this from their customer.0 -
I have suggested to my daughter that she signs up for Phone and Broadband with Plusnet. I did a little "research" and they seem to be well thought of. I did read somewhere that she can get the wireless router free but I can't remember where I saw this. Anyone able to advise?0

That depends on which product she is looking to sign up with.
If she signs up on Broadband Your Way Option 2 or above, she would be entitled to receive a free* wireless router if she stayed with us for 12 months.
* P&P charge of £6.99.“Official Company Representative
