Tesco Basic Package

Options
Seen this advertised on website. No monthly charge along with free number for directory assistance and customer services.

Thinking about getting my home phone through them but using 18866 for actual calls.

Does anyone know if there are any restrictions on the 18866 number from certain providers ie am i going to sign up to tesco and not be able to use the service.

Cheers

    Read where/what?
  • But you'll need a landline from someone AS WELL.  From BT, that's £10.50 per month minimum.

Tesco Home phone is a call package service - like TalkTalk, OneTel and others.  There doesn't appear to be anything in their T&Cs to prevent you using 18866 when you're registered with Tesco.

It's therefore a question of working out how many calls you make to see whether it's worthwhile going for anything other than 18866. Certainly, TalkTalk's free evening and weekend calls offer was last month's winner (don't know whether they've a similar offer this month).

As a guide, from a BT landline (which will cost you £10.50 minimum rental per month), you could make 1247 UK calls at any time of the day or night (to 01 and 02 numbers) on 18866 for the £12.47 Tesco Talk3 Anytime would cost you.  That's over 37 calls per day.

Just using 18866 would be cheaper even than Tesco Talk2 Evenings and Weekends at £4.47 (after the 3 month free period) if you averaged less than 15 calls per day.

Yes, they are - this offer is now on their Talk2 package and they are also including 3 hours of free calls to the USA, Canada or Australia as well.

Plus if you are referred to TalkTalk, you can now get £20 for joining Talktalk - using the method linked to in my signature

  • :-[ Oops, misunderstood the package. Silly me. Thought Tesco were offering a telephone rental package with no monthly charge - too good to be true.
  • No worries Sonic! I first started looking at my telephone bills when Tesco brought out their home phone package but at that time decided to go with Onetel, then TalkTalk came along and next year when my free year with them runs out I will look again. So at least its got you looking at reducing your costs.

Roll on the day when we can all ditch BT for line rental, then I really will be happy :)
  • I ditched BT years ago, went with Worldonline, who then transferred me to Servista who then transferred me to OneBill telecom, which I am with now. Previous providers stopped doing residential. It's the same line rental as BT but I don't get BT calling me up every 5 minutes trying to sell me expensive packages and because I'm not on BT's list I don't get any tele-sales. I use OneCall for the line rental and 18866 for my calls. I couldn't believe 18866 when I read about it on this site, but it is everything it says it is. It makes you wonder how much everyone who doesn't use this service is being ripped off.
