I've stopped buying chicken since the recent dispatches stuff and various other controversies. I do buy organic when I can afford it but I can't afford it for every purchase. I don't mind quorn although i think it needs a lot of added flavouring to give it taste instead of just texture. Would it be ok to cook it in a slow cooker (from frozen)? or would it be better to cook it, freeze and then defrost? I'm back at work after the summer hols soon and want to get organised freezing in bulk, slow cooker organising and a bit of both. thanks.
Ooh one more query whilst I'm at it... I don't think I can face handling meat at 7 in a morning for slow cooker. Would it be ok to cook overnight, switch off in a morning and leave in slow cooker during day to reheat later or would it need taking out of slow cooker and putting in fridge?
thanks

Yes you can use a slow cooker for quorn. See pages HERE for ideas.
The advice my book has is that all food should be taken out of the slow cooker (if not being served up) because it allows it to cool more quickly and is better for food safety. What you could do to avoid meat etc in the mornings is to prepare as much stuff as you can the evening before - keep it all covered in the fridge overnight, and then bung in the various pots and dishes of stuff into the cooker in the morning and set it going ready for when you get home...Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. I would cook quorn from frozen in the slow cooker - the reason for not cooking chicken from frozen is that it really needs to be cooked thoroughly, but quorn really just needs heating up.0

Well I did it and it was yummy. I feel like a proper old styler today and not just a wannabe! Curry was made without a bought sauce from things I had in - an achievement in itself, including basil and thyme grown from seed - it was spicy and creamy and cheap! The rest has been portioned up ready to go in the freezer for when I get back from night classes.0

Hello! I had a slow cooker for Christmas and I'm trying to work out what I can and can't cook in it - the complication being that I'm vegetarian.
Does anybody know if I can use my usual recipes with Quorn or soya? My guess would be to defrost the Quorn and add it towards the end to stop it losing its texture? Any advice would be much appreciated(and hopefully I won't ruin tomorrow's dinner!)
PS. I had never even heard of a slow cooker before reading these boards, so thanks everybody! :T'Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.'0 -
If you go to our main Slow Cooker Recipe Thread (linked below) then put quorn in the search box you'll get a few hits on it which will help, including an earlier question very similar to yours.

Oh dear. I've had a good look through the thread but can't actually find an answer to that question. Thanks very much anyway.
Never mind, I'll experiment and see how I get on. My poor OH - he makes a very good guinea pig :rotfl:'Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.'0 -
Hi,
On the slimming world thread I posted how I make my quorn mince bolognese in the slow cooker- very basic, chuck the whole bag of mince in still frozen, mix in a large jar of passata, and any veg you like to bulk it up- I often add frozen veh like frozen mushrooms and carrots and swede, whatever you fancy. I leave the SC on low all day then serve the sauce with spaghetti.
Also my Quorn sausage concoction which OH and I love and eat regularly- add a tin of mixed beans (Morrisons do a good own brand one), a tin of chopped tomatoes, 2 quorn sausages per person, herbs and spices to season and switch SC on low. 6.00 ta da it's ready!
I've never had any problem with the quorn going a funny texture- in fact we prefer the sausages in the SC than in the oven/grill.
Good luck, SarahYesterday is today's memories, tomorrow is today's dreams0 -
