Hi all.

I've been with Vodafone for about ten years, every year I just renew my contract and get another phone. I have had my new one since December, however I want to give my old fone to my son. Its a 6280.

I rang Vodafone and they were lovely and gave me a code to type in. I did this and the phone said something like 'phone lock is off' so it should be unlocked however it won't work on the new sim (o2) it says 'sim registration failed' does this mean its still locked or do we have to do something with the new sim. Its an o2 in a sealed pack.

Sorry I'm a real newbie here but I would have thought it was now unlocked?

Many thanks for any help

you might have to register the o2 sim first, where did you buy the sim from? there should be a booklet with registration information with the sim

    Wow that was fast! :D

Oh hang on then, my son has just read the packet and it says register to claim £2.50 free credit.

Doh sorry it looks like we need to register the sim. I've never done this before, I just put my old sim in the new phone and it works.

    I'll report back....

    Thank you again

The SIM should still connect, even though it has no credit - should say something like "restricted service only".

Try a friend's working sim (non voda) to see if it is unlocked - it won't hurt either the phone or the sim.

Registering the SIM isn't instantaneous - it will take time for the free credit to be available.

    Thanks Quentin

Spot on, I tried a working o2 sim in the phone and it worked fine so yes it is unlocked.

It is obviously the sim that is at fault so we need to get hold of another one. We have a couple here that my son sent for a couple of years ago when o2 were doing that free sim thing but they must have expired now.

inactive sim usually means that the phone has been blocked/barred (very unlikely if you have owned phone from new) or sim has been cut off due to inactivity.

i have a load of old o2 free sims that i ordered off of the o2 website ages ago. most of them display inactive sim on my k810 as they have been cut off by o2 , even though they were sealed.

EDIT: i must learn to read the thread properly, as i have just noticed your last reply :o

Yes that looks the case because we've tried another sim and that has worked. Only trouble is the 300 free texts didn't work. Oh well at least he has a working phone now.

Thanks for all your help guys. :T

PS I think it was lovely of Vodafone to unlock it for free.
