Card Fraud Involving PINs

If you’ve been the victim of card Fraud where you PIN has been used and your Card Issuer refuses to give you back your money because they claim you’ve been negligent with your PIN then maybe you should be asking,

“If the Card Industry's hardware & software can't keep my PIN secret,” how can I possible be held liable for alleged PIN negligence?

The stories below describe just 1 of the methods of recovering PINs.

Police Break £1Million Credit Card Fraud

A miniaturised interceptor inserted inside the terminal copies the information on the card's magnetic strip and picks up the pin.

The petrol station in question had been raided three weeks earlier by detectives, who had obtained evidence that the chip-and-pin terminal had been fitted with an intercepting device for a period of 15 days in March.

Mr Harris said: "Any retail outlet that has a chip-and-pin terminal is vulnerable, perhaps a corner shop or takeaway food premises."

Q. If you’ve used your card somewhere where it is known that the PIN pad has been tampered with. Hasn’t your card issuer a duty of care to tell you your PIN may have been compromised?

You have to tell them if YOU think your PIN is known by someone else.

Q Has any victim out there received advice from your card issuer to change your PIN?

OR

Q Has any victim been informed they can opt out of PINs and continue to sign by means of Chip & Signature Cards?

Curious James, you seem to have a 'thing' about fraud for some reason as most of the threads I see your name on relate to fraud.

Just wondering why ? Have you been a victim ? Are you on a crusade against card companies/banks ? Just an interest or do you have an employment connection ?

Its self evidently an obsession, and a tiresome one at that.

James, could you at least keep the local news round up and rhetorical questions to the Chip & PIN sticky? We don't need another thread for this.
The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.

No problem. Although I should imagine people using Petrol Stations travel far and wide, so it's not really a local issue. Therefore if you've used Petrol Stations in or around Edinburgh, at least check your statements.

Remember the nice people from the card industry saying you couldn't use cloned cards in UK ATM's? Read on.

£10,000 Plundered in 2 Hours Using Cloned Cards:

The cards he used are described as high-quality fakes - none was rejected by the machine at Barclays Bank in Chislehurst High Street, east London, on the evening of 27 March.

Many thanks for this post, OP. We were one of the 5,000 victims of the Edinburgh cloning. We only go into Edinburgh occasionally, but had used the Shell filling station at Craigleith in March. The card was used at an ATM in Trinidad & Tobago on the evening of 12th April. Bank of Scotland picked it up very quickly so perhaps by then they were already on high alert for these types of transactions.

Anyway, it was good to read the Herald article and learn how it all happened.

Well the OP encourages people to have cards that allow this kind of fraud. James, was this to do with you?

Using a cloned card at a Chip & PIN / Chip & Signature Compliant retailers should be almost impossible (Unless it's an overseas issued card than isn't CHIP compliant).

There serveral points here that are in the genuine cardholders interest.

    1. The genuine cardholder, unlike victims in these forums could never be accused of being negligent with their PIN.

    2. As the crook obviously hasn't obtained the PIN for the cloned card, then they were prevented withdrawing large amounts of cash from ATMs

    3. The crook increased the risk to themselves of being identified and caught by using a cloned card in a shop to get cashback.

    4. The retailer if they chose to bypass the Chip part of the system have only themselves to blame.
