Advice needed for tyres and brake parts, Please

Thanks. I just searched online for jaguar brake discs and pads, it didn't occur to me that they could be just cheap compatible parts.
Am I better off sticking to genuine jag parts or can you recommend another make?
I will definately start changing the tyres, can't afford to shell out for a new set every year (as well as servicing and petrol).
try searching for mintex or ferodo brake pads and discs, these are pretty good hard wearing pads with low dust from them (saves manky wheels) and do last a while.
there are some more expensive brands but for the miles you do i doubt they are worth it.
genuine jag parts should be good for a while aswell.
£100 is a fair price for a full set of pads and discs for a jag,i think it may be a little bit too cheap.(full set being 2 front discs and 4 front pads and 2 rear discs with 4 rear pads)
you are getting very poor mileage from those tyres im guessing this is due to the fact the jag is 4 wheel drive and a heavy car.
try michelins for more miles but they will be a bit more expensive.
let us know how you get on....work permit granted!0 -
I'm told I need front discs and pads and rear pads. This was reommended on the MOT last year & this year and when it was serviced this month. Now the ABS light keeps coming on.
I am confused as I assumed I would need front and back at the same time, as it's 4wd, probably just 'womans logic'.
The local Jag people only use Jag parts and labour is £49 per hour. (Local little guy £42)
So including vat £338 doesn't sound too steep (ooh and another Jag stamp in the book). But will get a couple more quotes.
Just like to say thanks to everyone for the helpful comments.
I must admit I was a bit nervous about this post as I expected more negative comments about owning a Gas guzzler etc. I get asked a lot about the mileage I get out of it and am constantly made to feel guilty (and yes I walk my kids to school!).0 -

the front pads and discs do most of your braking,so these are the first ones to go.the rear is also braking but isnt under the same load as the front.
according to the government most folk now own gas guzzlers this year that werent last year so dont feel bad about it.
remember its money saving, not money scrimping. you save your money for things you like....work permit granted!0 -
I've read in many places that keeping 4 tyres at about the same level of wear all round is essential on a 4WD vehicle to avoid transmission damage.
P6000's may not be the best tyre around these days's, but they are not as bad as some say and I have had 25-30K miles out of a set and they grip better than other so called premium brands I have had. They were also original factory fit on Jag. BMW Merc. not so long ago.
Falken 452's get rave reviews and as a not well known Japanese make are low on price, this is probably not your size but to give an idea:

If you were doing more miles and likely to wear a set of tyres out Michelin Pilot Premacy HP's are meant to be long lasting and perform very well.
To be honest I would not go to the bargain bucket for tyres, cheap tyres can also be nasty tyres increasing road noise significantly and not performing (gripping) anywhere near as well as the best. Rolling resistance is also a factor, you can see a difference of as much as 5% to 10% on MPG just by choice of tyre.0 -
Phone Ford for the parts you need. they carry the same part number afterall...0

Im not a jag owner but i replaced my disc`s and pads on my car with mintex boxset these i found to give much better braking feel and response over the standerd brakes, A quick look on ebay brought up these for jaguar (not nessicarly the right ones for your car but an example of price for a set of discs and pads £55 delivered) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JAGUAR-X-TYPE-MINTEX-REAR-BRAKE-DISCS-PADS-MDK0188_W0QQitemZ380020025735QQihZ025QQcategoryZ10390QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I paid £80 for fitting at the local back street garage that was front and rears fitted so depending on local labour prices id expect them fitted for well below £150
As for tyres i was a fan of the P6000 a few years ago till i discovered Federals, have a look on mytyres.co.uk to see what tyres are available for your wheel size.If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

I just thought I'ld give an update, Car is booked in tomorrow , found a local garage that came highly recommended. They advised me to do the rear discs as well as they are quite worn. Altogether for front and rear pads& discs plus p6000 tyre labour & vat, £368.
Plus I've won a £10 bet as my husband said I couldn't get it done for less than £400.
I am now on the hunt for touch up paint (halfords don't stock it) as someone accidently scraped the front bumper with a supermarket trolley and I now have a 5 inch white scratch. GRRRRR
Thanks again for all the advice.0 -
