Advice needed for tyres and brake parts, Please

Options
Hi, I've got a O2 Jaguar x-type 3L 4wd sport, needing front brake discs and pads all round.
I've had a quote from a jag speacialist place for £350ish and a similar quote from local garage.
Does this sound about right?
I had a quick look online at parts and was surprised at how cheap I could get them (around £100 with discount offer).
There was no mention of calipers so I assume I don't need them replaced?
Can anyone tell me how long the labour should take?
Also, How often should I expect to replace pads etc.

Also , I need a new tyre due to puncture. I have Pirelli 6000 all round. I have replaced 4 already due to slow puntures (one twice) in the last 6 months.
I've only had this car for 18 months and I've only done 5000 miles. In the last 10 years i've only ever replaced one tyre due to puncture.
Have I just been very unlucky or Should I replace this tyre with a different make?
If so, can anyone recommend one (preferably under £100)?

Any help will be greatly appreciated as I don't know much about cars and don't want to get ripped off again! (the seller of my old Rover 620TI needing new clutch/brakes/etc saw me coming a mile off!)

Well for a start the P6000 will last as long as the name suggests... 6000 miles before the thing goes out of shape or the shoulder gives up.

Put a Conti or Michelin on there instead.

As for the brakes - who said they ALL need replacing all round?
Get quotes from some smaller places first. The "specialist" might bot always be cheaper...

i wouldnt put cheap pads or discs on this car,if you do you will probably be replacing them every 6 months.
make sure the garage you are using is going to fit a good quality set of pads and discs and they should last a while.
if you have had so many slow punctures i would ask them to check the alloy wheels, they can become porous and cause slowly deflating tyres (the honda accord is affected by this)
as harvey says put a michelin or a continental on,it will last at least twice as long as the pirelli.

Intresting that. I had a ford mondeo (alloys fitted) where i had new tyres fitted and the front tyres always seemed to loose presure. How can they test the alloy wheels?

I agree with Harvey...do not buy the P6000s, they are shocking!

a visual inspection of the wheel when the tyre is off would be the first approach.

  • The quote you've had is pricey IMO. You could buy good parts for less than £100 for your motor and the labour is 2 hours max.

Don't buy P6000s, they're rubbish. I prefer Continentals or Michelin.

Thanks. I just searched online for jaguar brake discs and pads, it didn't occur to me that they could be just cheap compatible parts.

Am I better off sticking to genuine jag parts or can you recommend another make?

I will definately start changing the tyres, can't afford to shell out for a new set every year (as well as servicing and petrol).

Come on you drive a jag, surely money is no object and you're loaded ;)

Can't understand how you can afford a Jag and not be able to afford a set of tyres  If you're that hard up buy compatible parts or sell the car.

If they're anything like the older Jags, anything relatively serious needing repairing and it will cost an absolute bomb to sort out.

We were sick of buying cheap cars and replacing every year and instead of going on holiday for the last nine years and instead of buying the new kitchen we were saving for we decided to treat ourselves to a decent car. We have both always wanted a Jag. I don't know of any car that doesn't need tyres. Or for that matter anyone that enjoys buying them!
It cost me £6200 (private cash sale) instead of £11000 (from a dealer) and we could sell it today for more than we paid for it 2 years ago especially as it only has 32000 miles on the clock and is in immaculate condition.

Sorry if I come over a little annoyed but I don't see whats wrong with having a nice car, I've certainly enjoyed it more than I would have a new kitchen or holidays.

Just because I have a nice car doesn't mean I should get ripped off!

Good for you ! There is nothing better than realising a dream no matter what it is. I hope you're really enjoying your Jag and I'm sure you don't regret it for a minute.

When they said discs and pads all round, did they mean both front and back i.e. the discs and pads on every wheel / 4 complete sets ?

For high quality or genuine parts, you would be looking at at least approx £150 - £200 per set (i.e. for two wheels as they are often sold in pairs) for discs and pads and fitment. Approx £100 to £150 for the parts plus £50 for the labour. You would probably need to add VAT to this.

    You need to ask though:

How many discs and pads are they replacing ?

Why are they replacing the pads ?

Why are they also replacing the discs ?

What make of brake parts are they fitting ?

If you find this out, we can prob give you a more complete answer.
