  • In my nan and grandad's back garden there is a grand total of: 2 horses, 3 dogs, 1 cat and 2 rabbits buried.
If you see an address in Lancashire being dug up on Time Team or Meet The Ancestors - it's not mine! LOL

When our dog (golden retriever) died suddenly at home a while back, we didnt know what to do, we rang the vets,( who we had already rang half an hour earlier as she didnt seem very well), they told us to bring her in by car and they cremated her, the cost for this was £50.00....it was worth it as this has always been our worry of what to do if our pet suddenly died... will probably differ as all vets charge different prices

I don't believe that by law you are allowed to bury pets in the garden. The theory is that they could contaminate the water supply.

You took the words out my mouth moneysaver!!! That's some digging that's been done then! (no offence meant :))

Mind you, I once had 27 guinea pigs - that occupied quite some space when they went to piggyland in the sky! :rotfl:

Hate to think what happens if that garden gets turned over - it was clay so we couldn't dig too deep!

Hehehe...thing is my nan and grandad have loads of spare land around the property and they actually spoke to the council about it awhile back - council had no problems with it seeing as it's all privately-owned land.

And these animals were buried at the latest addition in 2000 - water supply is fine - we're all still living!

When my rabbit died at the end of November last year my vet asked what I wanted to do with the body and told that it was not illegal to bury him in my garden if I wanted.

  • I have never had an animal die at home, sadly, had to make the decision to have them put down due to old age/ illness. I always left the body at the vets for incineration by the veterinary practice. Your other options are to bury - which you're not meant to do- or have the pet cremated and ashes returned to you. The other option is to have a plot in a pet cemetery for your pet.

Our dogs have always been cremated and their ashes scattered on the rose garden at the pet crem - at home we have planted a bush for each at home with the children - generally during a BBQ where everyone present has raised a glass or two to the memory of said dog.

We tried to pick an appropriate bush for each - a holly for one who loved prickly bushes and a winter jasmine for the dog called "Jasmine". I have said to dh I would like to get a small brass plaque for each bush with just a name and dates.
