Does your son know how to read a gas meter?

With you on this one; the son should have noticed that the reading was wrong when it went down so much. I suspect of course that he didn't write it down properly or that the power company have typed it in wrong. A simple call telling them the meter reading wasn't 69 but 4069 would sort it.

Come on seriously have just done some quick calculations and he would have only used 54 units in that first period which leads me to believe that he has only just moved in/bought the property and therefore neglected to take a meter reading on moving in. The previous tenants/owners therefore should pay the bill and not your son however this is a big warning to take meter readings when moving house. Ps the reason i work out he must have just moved in is that the period isn't 3 months worth and is only 67 days not 90 days like i would normally expect from a quarterly bill.
  • When was the new meter fitted? - there should be an initial reading from that date (plus a final reading FROM the meter that was replaced)

Definitely needs to read the meter as the reading either side of the reading (29th Dec) are estimates.

If he has TOLD them it read 69 units (29th Dec) and the previous ESTIMATE was 3991 - they can only assume it has gone around the clock if the fact that it has been replaced (with one reading 0) has been missed.

And we can't simply assume that someone with a master in engineering read it correctly can we? A photograph would be nice!

:rotfl: Having an engineering background myself, I know that some of the graduate engineers we get coming through wouldn't know what it was even if they could read it.

I agree. So I am stuffed then as I don't have a degree at all, but I can read my electric/gas and water meter fine.

And I suspect the person who reads my meter does not have a degree in engineering either.

The academic qualifications of someone has nothing to do with the ability to do everyday things such as read a meter.

yes he has a masters in engineering
That does not mean he can read a gas meter!!!

I have a Masters in Physics, it does not mean I can mow a lawn!
  • And it degenerates slowly ......

If the meter is new, the reading would be zero?

Hence the estimate was taken from the old meter?

69 & 154 fall in line, so thats my two pen'orth

Is an engineer qualified to open the bonnet of a car and say "Yep, we have an engine 'ere" or am I missing something?

Lol !! RMP, no it just means you can afford to pay someone to do it for you!

Blimey there is some jump down your throat people on here today!

The OP knows where the error comes from - see their second post - I think they were just wanting to have a laugh showing what a wacky bill their son had received.
  • An MEng eh?! Not a phd then....
