Those prices exclude VAT (business site) and delivery. The £229 one ends up at £329 when you add the £40 vat and the £60 delivery.

Acer have quite good laptops, bought several now for myself as well as family and friends and never experienced any problems. This one I'm recommending is an Acer Extensa 5620 Core 2 Duo laptop. I bought one for a friend last week and its excellent and fits your budget

    Acer Extensa 5620 Notebook
Intel Core 2 Duo (T5450) 1.66 GHz Processor with 667 MHz FSB
    2048 KB L2 Cache
    2048MB DDR2 Memory
    160 GB ATA Hard Disk
    15.4 inch WXGA TFT display
    5 in 1 Card Reader
    DVD-SuperMulti Drive
    1 Year Carry in Warranty
    Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
Priced at £358.73 inc VAT, Delivery(super saver) inc Insurance is a further £25.05 which gives a final total of £388.16, slightly over budget but very high spec and well worth it.
