VW warranty issue - advice please

I am having a 'fly wheel' replaced under warranty today. The warranty for the car expires in November but they have advised me that although this part is normally covered by warranty for two years, the warranty for it will expire at the same time as the warranty for the car. They went on to explain that even if it was replaced just one day before the warranty expires, then it would only be covered for one day. This can't be right, can it?

It's a bit hard with warranty repairs. Had you paid for it, you'd have the 2 years cover but you haven't.

Doesn't make sense to me. Its the same part, fitted by the same workshop. Seems a petty way to deal with customers - especially those coming up to the 3 year mark and possibly about to change to a new car. I won't be of course (car is perfectly good) but they don't know that!

usually when the cars warranty expires then any work carried out under warranty will not be warranted, its just how the system works with most manufacturers.

I don't think this is correct even if your car is a million years old a new part fitted Should carry its own warranty.

But the op hasn't purchased that part or paid for it's fitting. It's been done under the existing warranty which expires in Nov.
S.O.G act surely doesn't apply here either because no goods have been sold or purchased?
Probably the fitting establishment has some sort of comeback on VW though if the new flywheel goes belly up again in less than 2 years?
The op doesn't say whether it's a used car warranty or manufacturers new car warranty. Two years would suggest the former. It's a bit mean of VW if it's new car warranty, surely more than 2 years then!
  • Hi

It is like most other warranty policies in other industries. Take some washing machines, for example. If you buy a washing machine with one year warranty and it breaks down, they will fix it. If it is not possible, they will replace it with a new one but, it will be warranted till the end of the year which started from the date you have the original one, not the date your replacement arrived! Some will go furthur and terminate the warranty once a new replacement machine was the only way to fix your problem with the old one!

It is true, I am afraid! I don't agree with this practice, but, what can we do?!

In answer to the query re my warranty -it was a new car and is still within the 3 years/60,000 miles warranty. I've done less than 40,000 miles but it will expire in November 2008 as the car will be 3 years old. Everyone seems to believe that there's nothing we can do about this absurd practice so I'm going to contact Which about it to see what they say. I'll report back when I've had a response. Thanks for all the useful feedback
  • Sorry Polly the 2 years bit was and still is confusing me. So VW warranty only covers the flywheel up to 2 years but your 3 year warranty expires in November and VW are replacing the flywheel "as a goodwill gesture" outwith the 2 years? Am I confused and being a pain in the bum?

Hi. The car was new in November 05 and came with a 3 year warranty expiring November 08. The flywheel is being replaced under warranty now and although this item would carry a 2 year warranty if I was paying for it at any other time, the warranty for it will only last until expiry of my original warranty ie November 08. My point is that as this is an expensive part, I cannot see why I do not have a full two year warranty on it anyway. I do accept the point that as I am not paying for it, then the terms of the Sale of Goods Act cannot come into force but it seems absurd. In fairness, the VW dealership agree with me but 'thems the rules'!

the dealership cant do anything about it and i very much doubt which will help you any.
the dealer can only carry out warranty repairs if the manufacturer is willing to pay them for it,unless its thier own warranty.
expensive or not, they wont replace it again even if it does go a day after the cars warranty expires.
i agree it is a poor practice.
