How to change broadband provider?

Options
I am currently with BT for my broadband, with my contract reaching its 12 month anniversary at the start of April.

I dont think the £23 a month I am paying is good value for money and am looking to move to O2. I have checked their website and they say I can get their broadband in my area.

Can someone please let me know the exact procedure that I need to follow to change my provider? I know I need to get a MAC code, but I'm not sure what order to do things in.

Should I request the code first, then go to O2 with it already in hand? Does requesting the code mean that BT will cut me off, even if I dont decide to go with O2? Will O2 tell BT I have left when the broadband changes over, or should I write to BT and cancel as well?

It all seems a bit confusing, so any help from someone who has made the switch would be most appreciated!

Thanks in advance

    Get your MAC first.

If you don't use it you shouldn't be cut off - though make sure that once your MAC is completed your contract is cancelled.

You have completed your minimum contract, so you can give notice to quit.

As they require 30 days notice, you could give that now, get a MAC and (if you don't want to waste your month's final payment) apply to o2 after around 15 days of your notice period - a MAC takes around 10 days to complete, so it should all be done within the 30 days.

But note that o2's current offer of £5 off the normal monthly charge (for life) ends on 30/4/08, so you may want to apply this month to make sure you get that.

I just switched from btyahoo to sky. I phoned bt and asked for my mac code and as soon as I got it, I phoned sky the same day and gave it to them. It took 11 days for me to switch to sky. I was still using my btyahoo broadband until the last minute.

Yes, it's just a case of requesting a MAC and giving it to the new provider.

Again, yes, what usually happens is you'll be using your connection and then all of a sudden the connection drops, you enter your new user name and password and you're back up and running, just a couple of minutes offline as you swap over.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
