Every customer satisfaction survey I've seen in computer mags has been won by Dell. They may be more expensive, but considering you can't just tinker around in a laptop like with a desktop it is something to consider.
When I buy a laptop (possibly January) I will almost certainly get a Dell.0 -

Thanks all,
But I really am on a budget!! I am looking under £300 best offers! I am aware that a good bit of research will be needed first!Jazz0 -
You can pick up some right bargains on eBay. I bagged a relatively long in the tooth IBM Thinkpad T22 last week for £160, but the spec is fine - 900MHz Intel Smart Step processor (equivalent to 1.3 Ghz desktop), 40 GB hard drive, 128 MB ram, DVD/CD drive, Windows 98, 14 inch TFT screen. Bought another 128MB memory stick (dead easy to install) for £13, a replacement battery for £14 and a port replicator plus a carry case for another £20. All in all that's a perfect lappy for a smidge over £200 - it's very fast too, and built like a tank.0
