You're not obliged to keep reading the thread you know!
I put the subject in the title so that those who are offended by private schooling don't need to bother reading.
I'm not trying to tell everyone that I have loads of money, believe me that we are already making a lot of sacrifices and will make more to come. We're all just trying to do the best we can for our families with what we have.0 -
The problem is that as a child if your parents can just afford to send you there and they have to save and scrimp, then you will be bullied mercilessly unfortunately.
Not nice, but that is just the law of the playground."I'm not from around here, I have my own customs"
For confirmation: No, I'm not a 40 year old woman, I'm a 26 year old bloke!0 -

I agree with this to a point. I felt this certainly when I was younger, my parents really struggled to keep me there financially, but this time around with my daughter, it seems to be completely different. Who knows, this may change as she gets older.0 -

I would bet the majority reading this thread cannot hope to afford public school fees, even if they saved for ever.
I appreciate that the responses are only there because the OP asked the question in the first place - but the amounts being quoted are just obscene to most of us, TBH. I work part time (due to other family commitments) and my husband works full time - and our only real debt is our mortgage - but our circumstances will never, ever stretch that far.
Luckily there are some very good state schools out there for the rest of us and my bright and well-adjusted kids attend one. Before all state schools are dismissed out of hand by this thread I just wanted to add my support for the high-performing ones. :T :jI knew someone would post something like this. Noone is slating state schools, I am just in a position to send my daughter privately, and so I do. Finances will only strectch to yr 6, then she'll be out to state!:D

Maybe it has changed since my exgirlfriend's day or my day, or maybe she was just particularly nasty. The latter being distinctly possible.
But anyways, I suppose it all depends on which school and area you go in. I would guess going to a historic private school with a rich history would be much worse than a modern one.
But that is just a guess.
My school was 450 years old the other year, it was tough, but hey, I was a fast runner!
EDIT: Stellabgh - see here, this is obviously not true of all schools, but a sweeping generalisation."I'm not from around here, I have my own customs"

Tends to work the other way round. I spent time at Private and State schools. Private was fine, I was never picked on for coming from one of the less well off families at all; never saw anyone else picked on for that reason either. At state school, I was picked on because I was posh; I left Private education as my parents couldn't afford it! The fact that many of the kids that picked on me came from much wealthier familes didn't seem to matter!
As far as "opportunities" is concerned, I can see what the other posters are talking about. Sports facilities are much better, science labs better equipped. I have more set homework at the age of 11 than I did for my GCSEs. I wouldn't change anything about my education at all, it's all worked out very well but until you experience the private system first hand, it's very difficult to understand how different it is.0 -
