Private school fees (merged)

  • Until Secondary school would it not be cheaper and just as beneficial to your child for state school with a private tutor at the weekend? As surely up to Year 6, they don't really learn that much. That way you'd be able to afford a better secondary school where the results really matter with GCSEs and A'Levels.

That is what we are planning, investing our money at the pointy end of their education seems more efficient, the secondary fees are around £7000/yr/child including meals, uniform & stationary...... £70k +inflation for the pair

Friends of mine have 3 children. Both parents went to private school (in my day, they were called public schools). They have moved into the catchment area of a very good school in Clifton, Bristol. Would someting like this be worth considering?

Yes, we've had a think about that but it would mean being far away from all our family and friends, our entire support network.

As we only ever plan to have the one child it's not worth it for us. I can see how it would be worth it if you have 3 though!

You'd be surprised. I was at a state primary and had extra tuition to 'keep up' with the private schools but it didn't come close. I was a straight A student at primary and when I went private I was straight Cs and was always behind everyone else. They had all been taught *how* to study, *how* to manage your homework, *how* to write to a decent standard. Thay had learnt other languages that I hadn't. Extra tuition just didn't cut it.

I want to move to where you live as all the secondary private schools are £12,000 a year upwards in the area where my daughter goes to school , as although I live in Crayford she goes to school in Medway where I am originally from . The secondary school I am looking at for her is £15,000 a year  plus meals and uniforms on top of that .

If you have to save to send Little Johnny to a private school you obviously cannot afford it.

Send 'em to state skool - 'aint dun me no arm.

My daughter goes to a private school in central Kent. she is in Reception, and the fees are nearly £3K per term. Not cheap, but the education (I do not just mean academically!) is fantastic!

Is it just me, or are others feeling this thread has become a little tiresome today, along the implied lines of 'I can afford ridiculously-priced public (private) school fees so my little darling will have a much better education than yours'? :p

I would bet the majority reading this thread cannot hope to afford public school fees, even if they saved for ever.

I appreciate that the responses are only there because the OP asked the question in the first place - but the amounts being quoted are just obscene to most of us, TBH. I work part time (due to other family commitments) and my husband works full time - and our only real debt is our mortgage - but our circumstances will never, ever stretch that far.

Luckily there are some very good state schools out there for the rest of us and my bright and well-adjusted kids attend one. Before all state schools are dismissed out of hand by this thread I just wanted to add my support for the high-performing ones. :T :j
PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
