    No we're not jealous....................

Well, there were a few posts a couple of pages back that most definitely appeared that way. In a 'chip on shoulder way', possibly from one's own childhood where it sounded like you felt life hadn't treated you, or your children, fairly, possibly?

But you are the only one who knows whether hand on heart you are jealous or not. And I for one am happy with that. Your business is your business afterall.

It was just an observation that I thought made sense when I read it.

No desire to argue about it though. :)

At the end of the day, life is not fair and (almost!) all parents believe they are doing the best for their own children. And that says it all.:T

Grammar schools are not fair and this is the truth. Unfortunately, emsywool was trying to tell us all that grammar schools (as they exist now) are fair and full of the most deserving. Which is why there was a big furore....

Lunar eclipse I have no desire to argue with you either. You seem like quite a caring person, however, you seem unable to believe that someone can have an emotion that is not attributed to themselves. I do care about things that aren't about furthering myself and my children's position. I care about other people's kids. Is that an alien concept to you? I was brought up to care about my fellow man, not just to think about myself. Why do you think most Grammar schools were done away with?
For the record I have had a fantastic life. I would like everyone-elses to be the same.

    To put it mildly!

I'm surprised you haven't given up defending your position yet. The tone has become quite aggressive and personal IMO.

and yet it is you who has arrived and personally attacked people ....

I didn't attack anyone, I just mentioned a change in tone that I had noticed. I felt that Emsy was being backed into a corner, regardless of who was actually saying what. That's all. Sorry if you feel I attacked you, that was definitely not the intention. :)

She is the only child in her class who wasn't tutored
She is a whole level above everyone else
Some kids in the class have regular help with reading
Most of her class cannot spell, speak correct English or do simple maths. (One got 4 out ot 40 in a mental maths test)

So sorry, grammar schhol is NOT full of bright kids.

Astonished by this:eek: Can you (but only if you want to) tell us what county you live in?

So sorry, grammar schhol is NOT full of bright kids. My daughter marvels at how poor the academic ability of some of her peers is. These kids got into grammar school purely and simply because their parents paid to tutor them, and once you've been tutored 2 yeats a blind elephant could pass the 11 plus

My friend works at a private school which boasts a 100% pass ratefor 11 plus and that says it all, does it not, as you cannot make a well below average child into a clever child, but if they're all passing the 11 plus, it shows anyone can be tutored to pass it. They do papers daily from year 3 and from year 5 go in every saturday to do them

Pupils tutored to pass 11 plus will struggle at grammar school and would be better in mainstream. You have to ask, is it a status symbol for YOU, or are you doing it for them??

    Lunar Eclipse,

I would seem that tutoring does work - in that it gets people through the door. However, it would appear to stop there.;)

    I've been Money Tipped!
I also think in the big scheme of things, only a minority of parents would have tutoring on their radar. It would never have crossed my parents minds for instance. It is common where I live, especially for children moving from the state to private sector at 11.
It is more than common where I live.
And the point I am making is that the 11+ stops being about selecting the cleverer children and start being selecting the ones that have been trained for this purpose.
Which is against what grammar school were designed to do.

The system would be much better if parents stopped thinking that academia is necessarely the best for their child. Take the german example and give apprenticeship the recognition it deserves.
