How has this become so personal? Absolutely fed up with it. I will send my DD to private school as I believe they are better in every respect for my daughter, and those of you that don't agree, that is fine, but I think I am making the right decision. I also think this thread should probably be coming to a close now!

kids should not be in school on a saturday. Why bother going in to sing and dance??????????????????????
    Weekends are for family fun

However i did not say all schools did that. I said the one my friend works at they go in saturdays from YEAR 5 to do 11 plus papers
School. Dance school. I suppose you have a point however as I said it was for fun I asked to go so why not if the parents are fine with it?
We didn't usually have family fun on Saturdays as my dad worked shifts (still does as a matter of fact) and family time was whenever we could grab it. It's why I still follow him like the dog does when I see him home. I make use of what I know I can get. My dad likes his job and whenever he had (has) pull days we had family time and that was fine for us. It's all relative to the family.
When the 11 plus is pending and the child wants to do it why not let them practice? I know I used to after dance when I came home from dance. I would do a paper or a few questions on a CD. I found it intriguing. Is it not possible these other children do to?
I do not understand why people have a problem with prep schools or private tuition. As long as you are not pushing the child I see it as fine to do. It is easier to learn while younger and that’s all the parents are using to there advantage at this stage. The same can easily be done with a stay at home mum. What is the problem really?

Without appearing to be having a go emsy, can I just say, and just think about this as a concerned observation hun, and not me having a go.
Just read your ost again ive quoted and you dsay you've never had a holiday abroad.

Now don't you think, being honest your child would benefit more from family holidays than private school over state?

As I said, we've never had much but we take our kids away at least 3 times a yr. when small we didnt take them abroad, bnut when they were 5 and 9 we took them to lapland for 4 days. They have since been to Euro disney, paris, climbed the eiffel tower, seen the louvre, been to Amsterdam and Prague and been sking for a week for thelast 4 years and next years is booked already

Now correct me if I am wrong, but that is all VERY educational for them and has broadened their horizons and I'd far prefer to spend money on that than on a private school. We trawl the net for bargains and fly easyjet
We're going to krakow for 6 nights soon, £370 for the four of us, all in. Another educational, mind broadening holiday which'll be fun family time too.
I'd far rather do that than waste money on something I can get for free

No problem with practise. Doing a bit of practise for 11 plus is a world away from solid tutoring

personally I think it is very demoralising for a child at grammar school to be struggling and unable to keep up, and thats what happens if a child passes purely because they have been tutored. This is happening all the time and I certainly wouldn't want to put a child of mine through it just so I could say she was at grammar school.

Yeah and the free one I went to wasn't worth the money in stone that it was built with. The education was passable and most of the children there didn't want to know. Any that did (ie like me) got bullied from the day they started until the day they left. Oddly enough after nearly 4 years of watching that my parents didn't want that for me anymore and chose an atmosphere that was more well suited for an education. Sometimes grammar and private may be the only way around it all. It depends where you live and what the local schools are like.

I wouldn't feel bad about wanting the best for your child if I were you. I know when I have children I will be doing my best for them so I think you should do what you think is right. At the end of the day you are still paying taxes that pay for other peoples children while you still pay for your own to be educated anyway. It's like paying twice so I do not know what they are complaining about really.
