Do you really believe thta it is a good thing for young children to spend such long days in the classroom and then weeks on end on holidays?
Saw my BIL last weekend. Both girls (same age as my kids, 8 and 10) go to school from 8.30 and come home around 6.30 or 7.30pm with all the afterschool clubs. No saturdays. I really don't want that for my own children and can't see how this is an aspiration.
Its not all day in the class room so its not really as it sounds.
Its some form of sports in the afternoons for a couple of hours, or cadets, D of E, matches against other schools on Wednesday or free sports for those not in teams ie: squash, swimming etc. Some times there is another academic less on afterwards, but not always.
At a private school its just not about academic lessons. There are so many other activities the children get involved in. They have some great inter house competitions. Both academic and funny ones. These are all done during the day. The plays and concerts are presented in the evening.
If I had to take him to all the extra activities he was involved in, not only would it cost me a fortune but I would be forever taking and collecting him from somewhere.

Are you really so ignorant of the country we live in?
Exactly. I won't quote your post in full, but it goes to prove my point. And I see the beginnings of it in some children in primary school. As you said to back me up, some people are so out of touch. And it's that attitude that is allowing the problem to get worse.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Of course variety is a good thing. But under no circumstances would I want my children to be away from home for longer than an adult workday.
I was watching my kids playing in the garden recently: it was all make believe and left to their imagination. Something that my nieces don't get since their time is always taken by organised activities.
I believe kids need time away from organised activities, just to be themselves. There was an excellent program on Radio 4 recently stating that we are ruining children by not letting have small amounts of boredom... that they learn to fill for themselves.I lost my job as a cricket commentator for saying “I don’t want to bore you with the details”.Milton Jones0 -
Well, Ricki, I was just comparing what my nieces are doing with waht my children are doing.

Thats why all children are different. They all blossom but in different ways.
One child may be happy sitting colouring all afternoon, while the next is happiest running around in the garden.
You never can beat the feeling of any proud Mum watching her children play. They grow up too quick.

It all depends where you live - Our local state schools are poorly run baby sitting service (primary)/over funded youth clubs at best(secondary). No -one would spend 7-10K a year on fees willy nilly without some research. Private school is not the luxury it once was, its more `just another bill`.. You may lucky to live in a good state school area. Many, many parents are not so lucky.
