Warning Next Directory

A warning about the next directory.
My wife recently was out shopping and as passing the NEXT shop. Some of their staff were in the entrance asking if she was interesting in the Next Directory. She said No. They said there is a free competition she can enter but she did not have to order the catalogue. Not wanting to pass up on a chance to win a competition she read the info and there was a section to tick to say you did not want the directory (which they charge for). She did that and double checked she would not receive the directory.
About 2 or 3 weeks later we came home to find the next directory on the doorstep. We thought well maybe they send them free if you don't buy one as at the end of the day it is their catalogue. About 5 or 6 weeks later my wife received a statement from next. They had done a credit check and set up a credit account in her name with a £250 credit limit and the cost of the directory had been charged to it. She rang up and complained. They agreed to clear the account and close it and apologised. They said that the staff in the local shops just enter the info and don't care if you have ticked no or not. They sent a letter confirming the account close and had the cheek to put a questionaire in asking why she was closing her account and asking her to ring and tell them what the problem was. She promtly rang and gave them another earfull as they requested.

SO BASICALLY BE CAREFUL WITH NEXT:naughty:

It was a competition to win a Car.
Just want name and address etc.
We are quite annoyed as they admitted they had done a credit check on her and everything.

Friend of mine did the same - had recently moved so received a "please supply your previous address for the credit check" letter. Sounds like the branch staff may be getting a few quid and/or sales targets - not good.

Tell them to come and collect the catalogue and invoice them for the storage of it.

Actually, I think I remember reading the T&Cs on one of these competitions (they're always running them!), and it does say something about an account with them... some say tick to receive catalogue, some say tick not to receive it. Then there's always something along the lines of "by supplying us with your name and address blah blah blah...." meaning they're going to use it for something. I never enter competitions like that.

I've never paid for a Next directory though, as you usually only have to pay for it if you order something, whereas I just look through it, and if I want something, I buy it from the shop.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Is this right? I thought you had to pay regardless of whether you ordered or not:confused:

Well my mum and I have had them sent every year, and unless we order something, we've never got a bill, so just presumed that was the norm...

My mam got a Next catalogue once and ordered a few things for my baby out of it. When the next one came out, they just sent her another and billed her for it, even though she didn't want it! She complained and got her money back.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

    Same here!

And when I have ordered, they've charged me for the directory but given me free delivery on the first order so it all equals out x
